Company, a landmark musical by Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and George Furth (book), is a witty and insightful exploration of relationships, marriage, and the complexities of adult life in New York City.
The story revolves around Bobby, a single man in his mid-thirties, surrounded by married friends who constantly question his bachelorhood. Through a series of vignettes featuring his married couples, Bobby grapples with the concept of commitment and wonders if marriage is truly for him. He witnesses the joys and struggles of his friends' relationships, from the seemingly perfect couple with underlying tensions to the openly dysfunctional pairings.
Company, which premiered on Broadway in 1970, is considered a groundbreaking musical. It broke away from traditional narratives and tackled contemporary themes of relationships and singledom. The musical has enjoyed numerous successful revivals, including a critically acclaimed 2018 production directed by Marianne Elliott, proving its enduring relevance.

COLLEGIATE THEATRICS: Alex Vanburen of Austin Peay State University
November 16, 2023Today, we continue to celebrate the return of Collegiate Theatrics featuring one of our favorites from the theatre department at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville: Alex Vanburen, a native of Johnson City, Tennessee, who graduated from APSU last May. We first met Alex when they auditioned for a role in our January 2020 production of La Cage Aux Folles for Circle Players, a role for which they won much acclaim, and whom we most recently saw onstage at Clarksville’s Roxy Regional Theatre, playing Riff Raff in the company’s latest iteration of The Rocky Horror Show.
