The National Ballet of Ukraine returns to Montreal to perform La Bayadère, an Indian epic of eternal love complete with lush temples, fanciful costumes, Hindu gods and vibrant colours. At the centre of this classic ballet is the bayadère, Nikiya. Although she has been “married” to a deity and must spend her life serving this deity with rituals, acts of worship and dancing, Nikiya loves Solor, a noble warrior, and is desired by a High Brahmin in the temple. The events that follow – lust, betrayal, death and revenge - are inevitable, but when the gods unleash their vengeance, the bonds of eternal love are unbroken.
