Homebodies, written by Zainab Hussein, is a new play presented as part of the first Midwestern Festival of SWANA (Southwest Asian and North African) Plays, hosted by New Arab American Theater Works at Open Book Performance Hall. Set in a house on the border of Iraq and Iran, the play follows a mother and her daughters who are stranded as the airspace closes and the U.S. State Department urges Americans to leave, forcing the three women to confront whether an escape is truly possible. The festival features six plays by Midwestern SWANA playwrights and is directed by Sherrine Azab, with readings followed by audience talkbacks facilitated by members of the SWANA community.
