BWW Review: Jungle Theater's Production of the New Play ANNAPURNA is Gorgeous, Funny, Heart-Breaking, and Starkly Poetic
by Jill Schafer - September 09, 2015
Annapurna is the tenth highest mountain in the world, named after the Hindu Goddess of nourishment. In the new play by Sharr White, Ulysses writes an epic poem about his ex-wife Emma in which he uses climbing Annapurna as an analogy for their long, complicated, fractured relationship. The revelation of the poem comes at the end of 90 minutes of taut, natural, funny, heart-breaking, real, beautiful dialogue between these two layered and well-defined characters. And you couldn't ask for two better actors than Angela Timberman and Terry Hempleman to play Emma and Ulysses. Everything about the Jungle's production of ANNAPURNA, from the set to the acting to the music to the direction to the costumes (or lack thereof), is gorgeous in a starkly realistic yet poetic kind of way.

BWW Review: Dark & Stormy Delivers an Intense and Terrifying Production of the 1980s Play EXTREMITIES that is as Relevant and Topical as Ever
by Jill Schafer - August 31, 2015
With their sixth production in the three-year life of the company, Dark & Stormy once again delivers a short, intense, well-acted and directed play in an unconventional space. But EXTREMITIES has none of the dark humor that could be found in some of their past shows. It's all violence and drama and complex moral questions. This 1982 Broadway play turned 1986 movie starring Farrah Fawcett explores the weighty themes of sexual violence, power, and justice. There's no clear winner in this story, no obvious right and wrong, just a lot of grey area, where most of us live. Each of these four characters, beautifully portrayed by this excellent cast, is at times sympathetic and at times infuriating in their words and choices. More than 30 years after it was written, EXTREMITIES is as relevant and topical as ever.

Old Log Theatre to Present THE VELOCITY OF AUTUMN, 9/11-10/24
by BWW News Desk - August 05, 2015
Old Log Theatre's 2015/16 season opens with the regional premiere of Eric Coble's new dramatic comedy THE VELOCITY OF AUTUMN. This two person play takes place in a simple Brooklyn brownstone; 79-year-old Alexandra lives a solitary existence with her fleeting memories and is at an impasse with her family over how she should spend her autumn years.  Alexandra's long-absent son enters as a most unlikely mediator, to try and save his mother's life as much as his own. Funny and sweet, aching and revelatory, this perceptive play reveals both the fragility and ferocity of life.
