Marcus Center For The Performing Arts Presents The Community Arts & Funk Festival

By: Sep. 10, 2010

The Community Arts & Funk Festival runs September 18, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts Peck Pavilion. The festival is a collective celebration of urban visual and performing artists.

The outdoor art gallery open from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m., will showcase a broad range of talented urban artists, both academically trained as well as self taught, who offer a wide variety of subject matter, concept and technical approaches. Caricature and portrait artists will also be on hand.

The eclectic appeal of the urban music genres of contemporary funk and alternative soul will serve as the musical component of the festival. A series of seasoned musicians emerging from local and regional neighborhoods will perform from 6 - 11 p.m. and offer music to uplift, inform and entertain.
Joining the visual and performing artists will be arts and theater organizations that will present information and bring awareness about their organization's goals and missions while sharing the positive impact they hold in the communities they serve.

Families with children can participate in completing a 4' x 8' coloring mural that will be led by area fine artist Reginald Baylor, the first Pfister Hotel artist in residence. Della Wells, collage artist, invites festival goers to join her in creating a large collage. Proceeds of the sale of the mural and collage will be donated to the festival.

The Community Arts & Funk Festival is free and open to the public all day as well as in the evening during the live music performances.
