Roberto Clemente: A Diamond Within is a world premiere play by Cándido Tirado, directed by Plowshares Theatre Company founder and Artistic Director Gary Anderson. The play dramatizes the life of baseball great Roberto Clemente, one of the few Latin athletes who recognized his African ancestry, tracing his journey from Puerto Rico to an 18-season career with the Pittsburgh Pirates and his advocacy for the civil rights of Black and Latino individuals. Elvis Nolasco stars as Roberto Clemente, with Augustus Williamson stepping into three pivotal roles following a casting change. The production was commissioned as part of Plowshares' Black Theatre, Latin Roots play development program, designed to collaborate with Afro-Latino theatre artists on new works exploring the Black and Latinx experience.
