THE 39 STEPS at One Stage Theatre

What happens when Alfred Hitchcock’s suspenseful world of international intrigue collides with outrageous comedy? Find out when One Stage Theatre presents The 39 Steps, October 17 through November 1, 2026, at One Stage Studio in Fremont.

Fast, funny, frantic, and completely unforgettable, The 39 Steps transforms a classic spy thriller into a wildly entertaining theatrical adventure packed with murder, espionage, romance, mistaken identity, and laugh-out-loud surprises.

Adapted by Patrick Barlow from John Buchan’s 1915 adventure novel and Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic 1935 film, the story follows Richard Hannay, an ordinary man who finds himself caught in an extraordinary conspiracy. After a mysterious encounter turns his life upside down, Hannay is accused of murder and pursued by authorities as he races across the country to uncover the truth and clear his name.

But don’t expect a conventional spy thriller! This ingenious comedy combines Hitchcockian suspense with physical comedy, rapid-fire character changes, daring escapes, and delightfully ridiculous situations. The result is a theatrical roller coaster that keeps audiences guessing while giving them plenty of reasons to laugh.

Leading the adventure is Scott Dai as Richard Hannay, the unsuspecting hero swept into a dangerous world of spies and secrets. Isabelle Polito takes on the roles of Annabella, Margaret, and Pamela, three women who become part of Hannay’s extraordinary journey.

Meanwhile, Finn Hekkala and Cordelia Willis bring the chaos to life as the Clowns, portraying a seemingly endless parade of characters as the action hurtles from one absurd situation to the next. From quick-change transformations to inventive physical comedy, their performances help turn this suspenseful adventure into a riotous celebration of theatrical creativity.

Directed by Lorraine VanRod, with Stephanie Kara serving as Producer, One Stage Theatre’s production invites audiences to experience a classic tale of intrigue in a fresh, playful, and thoroughly entertaining way.

Whether you’re a longtime Hitchcock fan, a mystery enthusiast, or simply looking for a fun night out, The 39 Steps delivers the perfect combination of suspense and silliness.
