Breakdown
Man of La Mancha: Miguel de Cervantes/Alonso Quijana/ Don Quixote: Plays both a tax collector and a knight. Charismatic, energetic, sympathetic, full of unshakeable faith in the inherent goodness of humankind. Must be able to transform from the author Cervantes into the character Don Quixote. Tall and thin, a man of gentle courtliness leavened by humor. He is in his late forties but his dominant qualities are childlike – ingenuousness, a grave and endless curiosity about human behavior, candor which is very nearly self-destructive. He has, too, the child’s delight in play-acting. Cervantes’ manservant/Sancho Panza: A comic role; Cervantes' manservant and "stage manager"; a pragmatic, loyal servant and sidekick; old as or older than his master, short, rotund, and suspicious; an illiterate and shrewd peasant primarily interested in eating and drinking. Aldonza (also plays Dulcinea): the serving wench at a roadside inn, whom Quixote names Dulcinea Dulcinea (played by Aldonza): Her life is transformed by Don Quixote’s belief in her; wild and lusty; must be prepared for vocal and physical demands of the role; will be "man handled" and must have dance ability. A savage alley cat, veteran if not always victor of many backfence tussles. The Governor: the leader of the prison inmates. The Innkeeper (played by The Governor): A strong but kind and sympathetic man. Maria: The innkeeper's shrewish wife. Antonia: Alonso Quijana’s niece; worried about the effect of her uncle's madness on her upcoming marriage to Dr. Carrasco. Dr. Carrasco: The prosecutor of Cervantes' case; Antonia's fiancé; a man of breeding, intelligence and logic; disguises himself as the Knight of the Mirrors. The Padre: A man whose own convictions are challenged by meeting Don Quixote; wise and kind; sets wheels in motion to turn Alonso from his madness and persuade him to return home. The Housekeeper: Alonso Quijana's strong housekeeper who is full of hope for her master. Pedro, the head muleteer: A rough, sturdy muleteer. The Barber: Traveling barber/doctor whose shaving basin/hat is believed, by Quixote, to be the Golden Helmet of Mambrino. A comic role. Captain of the Inquisition: An imposing, cruel man. Fermina: A servant girl. Moorish Dancer: Gypsy girl who dances lasciviously and accompanies herself with a nasal whine; Don Quixote finds her charming; Sancho believes her to be a trollop. Don Quixote(Cervantes) male. baritone, 35 – 65, lead Sancho Panza male, tenor, 30 – 50, lead Aldonza (Dulcina) female, soprano, 35 – 55, lead Innkeeper male, bass, 35 – 65, supporting Dr. Corrasco male, baritone, 35 – 55, supporting Padre / Juan male, tenor, 40 – 50, supporting Barber / Prisoner / Muleteer male, tenor, 30 – 50, supporting Antonia female, mezzo, 18 – 32, supporting Captain of the Inquisition male, N/A, 30 – 55, cameo Housekeeper female, mezzo, 40 – 70, cameo Pedro male, baritone, 22 – 35, cameo Maria female, various, 35 – 60, cameo Fermina female, 16 – 32, cameo ______ Camelot: King Arthur/Wart: The once and future King; Arthur is wise generous, compassionate, and boyish—rather unsure of himself, yet is an inspiration to others. Queen Guenevere: Queen of Camelot; King Arthur's bride who falls in love with Lancelot; a young and spirited girl who is caught up in chivalry and the exciting possibilities of a promising life; she loves Arthur, but is very much thrown by the arrival of Lancelot. Lancelot Du Lac: Knight of the Round Table; an abundantly self-assured yet amazingly talented and passionate French knight who falls in love with Queen Guenevere. Merlin: The wise wizard who tutors Arthur; he disappears after the second scene in the show; non-singing role. Sir Pellinore: A comic and stuffily British elderly knight; dedicated friend to Arthur; very eccentric. Mordred: The evil young, illegitimate son of Arthur. Sired by Arthur when the king was young and naïve; a thoroughly and fascinatingly unlikable fellow. Tom Mallory of Warwick: A young, hopeful boy who wants to join King Arthur’s army and become a Knight of The Round Table. ______ Spamalot: King Arthur: King of the Britons; cannot count to three. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Sir Lancelot the Brave/French Taunter/Knight of Ni/Tim the Enchanter: Sir Lancelot the Brave: A flashy knight who is homicidally brave; has trouble remembering words; closeted homosexual. Robin’s Lead Minstrel: Never knows when to shut up. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Dennis’s Mother/ Sir Bedevere the Strangely Flatulent/Concorde: Dennis’s Mother: A Pepperpot—middle-aged, matronly type played by a male actor in drag; a politically-active peasant who is the widowed mother of Dennis. Sir Bedevere: A wise but flatulent knight/scientist. Concorde: Lancelot's trusty servant/steed; finishes Lancelot’s thoughts. --------------------------------------------------------------------- The Mayor of Finland/ Patsy/ Guard 2: The Mayor: Proud of his home, Finland; character who really shouldn’t be in this musical. Patsy: King Arthur's trusty servant/steed and constant companion. -------------------------------------------------------------------- God (taped): Gives Arthur his mission to find the Holy Grail; quite crabby.
