BREAKDOWN

HAIRSPRAY

TRACY TURNBLAD (plays late teens): our plus-size triple threat heroine. A joyous bundle of amazing belt voice, terrific dance skills, and infectious personality…instantly lovable, always positive, the unstoppable teenage force of nature that lights up Hairspray.

EDNA TURNBLAD (40’s): Tracy’s oversized mom…a typical ‘50s housewife (except for the fact she’s played by a man in drag). Over-protective, fearful of the outside world, practical to a fault…until her cherished daughter wakens the diva who has been hiding behind those 52 double D’s and Edna joins the ‘60s with a bang! Sings and dances with verve and abandon.

WILBUR TURNBLAD (40’s): Tracy’s slightly nutty, incredibly sweet dad. His love for his two girls knows no bounds. A song and dance character man with eccentric charm and likeability to spare.

CORNY COLLINS (30’s): host of the Corny Collins show…a sexier version of the young Dick Clark…handsome, smart, and ready to blaze new trails on ‘60s TV. Terrific singer and dancer with tons of polish and charisma.

PENNY PINGLETON (plays late teens) Tracy’s wallflower best friend…a typical Baltimore teen who isn’t cool - until she gets totally hot for a forbidden boy…great singer and dancer who can travel from nerd to hottie.

VELMA VAN TUSSLE (40’s): the ambitious, manipulative, tackily glamorous former beauty queen (Miss Baltimore Crabs) who now runs Station WZZT with a velvet fist. Living her ambitions through her daughter Amber…and woe to anyone in the way! Big belt voice.

AMBER VAN TUSSLE (plays late teens): the spoiled rotten golden girl of Patterson Park High. Beautiful, popular - and none too bright…the head cheerleader from hell.

LINK LARKIN (plays late teens): the singing/dancing hunky heartthrob of the Corny Collins show…sex on a stick to teenage girls. Sings and dances with sex and swagger.

SEAWEED J. STUBBS (plays late teens): African-American hottie who befriends Tracy and bewitches Penny. Sexy, charismatic, and full of righteous soul…amazing singer and dancer.

LITTLE INEZ (plays early teens): Seaweed’s full of attitude little sister. A star-to-be if she can just get a chance in this segregated world. Sings and dances with style and sass. (NOTE: doubles as Dynamite #3-Shayna)

MOTORMOUTH MAYBELLE (40’s): the African-American host of Negro Day at WZZT she’s a charismatic DJ who is proudly Big, Blonde, and Beautiful. She is also the soulful and deeply moving voice of the newly arriving Civil Rights movement. A huge warm personality, with a voice that raises the roof and stirs the soul.

FEMALE AUTHORITY FIGURE (40’s): hilarious singer/dancer who can find the funny in multiple roles, including:

PRUDY PINGLETON: Penny’s Bible-thumping, racist mother-the name says it all

THE DOLLHOUSE MATRON: tough talking warden of women’s prison

THE GYM TEACHER: the butchest thing at Patterson Park High

MALE AUTHORITY FIGURE (40’s): singing/dancing character man who can find the funny in multiple roles, including:

HARRIMAN F. SPRITZER: President of Ultra-Clutch Hairspray-a typical businessman, uncomfortable in front of the camera, ultra-concerned with brand image and the bottom line

THE PRINCIPAL: the officious, unctuous, scolding head of Patterson Park High-a ‘50’s dinosaur in an exploding ‘60’s world

MR. PINKY: the affable owner of The Hefty Hideaway - for both business and personal reasons he is a true lover of the plus-size gals.

FEMALE CHORUS and/or Pit Singers (20s) Females with great pop voices, comedic skills and move well. Ensemble roles.

MALE CHORUS (20s) Males with great pop voices, comedic skills and move well Ensemble roles.

SEX WITH STRANGERS

A raging snowstorm traps Olivia, a frustrated novelist, in a secluded cabin with Ethan, a younger, tech savvy, successful and attractive blogger who has gained fame writing about his many one-night stands. Undeniable chemistry ignites into a night of passion between these two opposites and transforms into something more complicated. Online exploits interfere with real-life connection in this smart, funny and sensual drama, proving that you can’t judge book by its author. This is a two-character play.Seeking: Male and female actor, who may also rep in Hairspray. Scenes will be provided.

OLIVIA: Female. (early-mid 40s) ALL ETHNICITIES. Strong, extremely smart, must bring some heat as well. An intellectual: not weepy. Has lots of barriers up, not very happy. Has a ‘spine’. Is unhappy, but not gonna fall apart. Trying to get her career back on track. Smart, sensual, and beautiful with a European flare, she lives her life romantically. Passionate writer; so passionate that she hasn't let other people read anything she has written for years because of the middling reviews of her first novel. However, this isn't due to a lack of confidence in her work or in herself, she knows her work is good, and is comfortable in her skin. A luddite by choice, she surrounds herself with great books and other tangibly beautiful things.

ETHAN: Male (mid-late 20s) Ethan is a 28-year-old blogger-cum-best-selling wunderkind who is trying to move past his Tucker Max-like reputation for writing about his many drunken one-night stands. He’s a charming, youthful stud with the personality of a playful puppy, who has already written two best-selling books that were on the New York Times best seller’s list for a record number of weeks under the pseudo-nom Ethan Strange, in which he reveals a series of sexual hookups. He is like a hyperactive child, filled with braggadocio, possessing lots of charm, but there are hints at depth. After bedding over a hundred women in two years he is looking for a real relationship with someone who is his intellectual equal.

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO SNOOPY

ALL ACTORS WILL LIKELY REP IN HAIRSPRAY, DEFAULTING TO SPT9 SALARY RATES, WITH A WEEKLY REPERTORY OVERLAP PAYMENT.

SNOOPY: The ultimate showman and a true triple threat. Can command a stage and has great comic timing. The star. His arrogance is amusing, not off-putting. Can tap dance extremely well. Tenor.

CHARLIE BROWN: has good intentions but never quite gets it. Loveable. Genuine. Insecure. The heart of the show. Great mover. Baritone.

LINUS: smartest person in the room and knows it. Optimistic. Has a nervous energy, at times. Great Mover.Tenor.

PEPPERMINT PATTY: a tomboy. Sporty. Very forward. Moves naturally like a jock but can be a girl when she needs to be. Able to show her vulnerable side underneath the tough exterior. Has a crush on Charlie Brown. Great dancer and Tapper. Mezzo Belter.

LUCY: Bossy. Pushy. Know-it-all. But we still like her. Great comedic timing. Great dancer and Tapper. Mezzo Belter.

SALLY: Ditzy. Bubbly. Not the smartest. Very opinionated. Loves Linus. Finds herself hilarious. Gets by on her looks. Great dancer and Tapper. Mezzo Belter.

WOODSTOCK: Could be male or female. Strong dancer. Breakdancing/Pop Lock background a plus. Must be an incredible physical comedian with incredibly expressive eyes. Mime and dance strengths. Somewhat odd-- lives in his own reality. Strong in improv. Acts out the entire story in Great Writer as Snoopy types it. Does not sing in the show. This role is important choreographically, so we are looking for someone with very unique qualities.

CASTING WILL NOT BE COMPLETE UNTIL WE HAVE ACHIEVED DIVERSE REPRESENTATION. ALL ETHNICITIES SOUGHT. Also note that Theatre Aspen does not provide housing for pets.
