Seeking:
SAM
(Male early 40s), under Secretary of State for Political Affairs. WASP, patrician, successful but with a bit of a “bad boy” underneath his polished and All American good looks. Very successful with women and in his career and generally does what is expected outwardly. Has a surplus of natural charm, yet he is still a boy who learns to grow up by the end. Character also plays himself in flashbacks when he is in his late teens (more optimistic, kinder and less world weary than himself as an adult).
BUD
(Male 30s), SAM’s aide. Irish. A smart family man with a dry sense of humor. Serious, ambitious and loyal; the ideal political assistant who likes to be in control of all essential details. He wants the best for Sam’s career (and his own), but does not understand Sam’s personal needs and the changes he is going through.
DEXTER
(Male 60s or above), an Episcopal minister. Old fashioned, disciplined, and with a good sense of humor. Possibly in the closet but not too obviously so. He has long since repressed his natural desires for the sake of the school. Warm-hearted and forgiving.
PERRY
(Male 18+ to play late teens), HARRIET’s son. Conflicted between doing what is expected and following his heart. Appealing and intelligent; senses he is out of tune with the world he has been thrust into, eager to discover how and where he might belong; he's his mother's son in that there is no self-pity in him; he is determined to find out who he is.
HARRIET
(Female early 60s), Perry’s mother. WASP. Well groomed and well dressed. Traditional, imperious, tough, no nonsense; sees life as a game to be won. Wants was is right and best for her son and his legacy. Would rather bury the truth than face reality.
ALISON
(Female early 40s), Recently widowed, (was married to Perry). Well dressed and put together. Originally from less than privileged origins (she was a “townie” from Martha’s Vineyard), Alison joined the ranks of the WASP elite by marrying Perry. Alison’s outlook is changing when we meet her. Where once she agreed to live a lie in order to keep her status, she is now reexamining her choices and future.
