THE MATCHBOX MAGIC FLUTE
PLEASE NOTE: Unlike traditional opera – the cast of THE MATCHBOX MAGIC FLUTE will all make up the ensemble. Seeking strong musical theatre performers who may also have a few years of classical training under their belt. We are interested in classically trained voices, but interesting voices as well (think indie, folk, etc). Also seeking performers who play instruments (at at least an intermediate level of proficiency). Please specify any classical vocal training and/or intruments in your submission.
[TAMINO] Male, 20s – 30s, any ethnicity. The prince. On an epic quest to free and marry PAMINA. Charming and sincere – he’s beguiling and graceful. Lively, agile and witty. Ideally a TENOR, but could be a very high baritone.
[PAMINA] Female, 20s – 30s, any ethnicity. The princess. Daughter of the QUEEN OF THE NIGHT. Must accompany TAMINO in his trials to save (her) and eventually marry her. Soulful, quick witted and playful – she is both the ingenue and our heroine. SOPRANO.
[QUEEN OF THE NIGHT] Female, late 20s – early 50s, any ethnicity. Wild and unleashed. She is unbridled in her rage and demand and her vengefulness. It’s all extravagant. She is pure id. There is almost a certain unreal quality to how high she sings. Classically trained SOPRANOS who are comfortable being physical during this big sing.
[PAPAGENO] Male, 30s, any ethnicity. TAMINO’S trusty sidekick. Charming and also a little bit odd. We root for him, big time. Very much wants to find love. BARITONE or BARI-TENOR. Strong comedic chops.
[THE THREE LADIES] Females, 20s, any ethnicity. Woodland nymphs. They might be a little bit feral and scary, but are also quite funny. Young and playful. Carry out many of the QUEEN OF THE NIGHT’S demands. One will Double as PAPAGENA – (20s). Quirky and funny. Finds her love in PAPAGENO. Two will back up THE SPIRIT. SOPRANOS of all ranges who must be able to blend (Please notate range).
[THE SPIRIT] Female, early 20s, any ethnicity. Small and ethereal – waif like. Airy and light. Offers guidance and clarity. Note: This was originally scored for and sung by a boy Soprano and many productions feature three spirits. SOPRANO.
[SARASTRO] Male, 30s – 50s, any ethnicity. Owner of the temple. Commanding and authoritative, but not malicious. Mature and grounded. BASS (this can be a musical theatre bass singer who has a good low E).
[MONOSTATOS] Male, any age, any ethnicity. The (semi-comedic) interesting villain. Pines for and after PAMINA. The QUEEN OF THE NIGHT’S favored co-conspirator. Lively and devilish. Ideally a BARITONE OR TENOR, but can be almost anything. A character, who works well as part of an ensemble.
