The play is set in Bushwick, Brooklyn and other cities along the eastern seaboard in 1958. Roles listed are the primary role for each actor. There are various doubled small roles in the play which will be assigned once each principal role is cast.
SEEKING:
Jack Lovington:
Early 30s, Caucasian. Good-hearted, anxious and slightly naïve cab driver who is torn between his dream of skating in the derby and the love of his anti-derby (and not very attractive) fiancé, Aurora. He seeks the guidance of Father Kosicusko who is a father figure to him. He also writes astoundingly poetic letters for a working class Brooklynite.
Lenny Ringle (and as cast):
40s, African-American. A businessman through and through, he lives the derby and is determined to make Jack Lovington a derby star. He’s crass, and he’s a visionary. Somewhere underneath it all he has a heart.
Beth Nutterman (and as cast):
Early 30s, Caucasian. One of Lenny’s best skaters. She’s a crowd pleaser, fiercely competitive, a company girl, and a lesbian.
Charlie Heartbreak (and as cast):
Early 30s, African-American. He is physically intimidating and is known to derby crowds as the “decapitator.” He habitually refers to himself in the third person.
Bert Fineberg (and as cast):
40s, any ethnicity. Stereo-typical 1950’s commentator who is serious about derby play-by-play, complete with all the melodrama, hyperbole and sponsor announcements. He’s very excited about Jack Lovington. His sidekick is cut-out of a co-commentator named Larry.
Father Domingo (and as cast):
20s/early 30s, Latino. Shares the parish with Father Kosciusko. He is a complete showman on the pulpit, using theatrics and special effects to engage his congregation. His services are completely in Spanish, and he speaks very little English.
Cindy Gums (and as cast):
20s Asian-American. She is a fearless and foul-mouthed skater. She also bites.
The following roles have been CAST. Actors auditioning may be considered for possible replacements should they become necessary.
Lindy Batello:
CAST. Early 30s, any ethnicity. Foul-mouthed, violent, promiscuous, alcoholic skater brought out of semi-retirement by Lenny. She’s all fists, all the time and particularly dangerous without her happy pills. If she weren’t so messed up she’d be a romantic.
Father Kosciusko (and as cast):
CAST. 40s, any ethnicity. He is an actual father figure to Jack, and while he appears to disapprove of Jack’s derby obsession, he secretly likes it. He is slightly paranoid and feels he is being pushed out of his parish in favor of Father Domingo and his bird extravaganza.
