BREAKDOWN

PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Please prepare a brief cut of a gospel vocal selection featuring yourself singing accompanied, using either live or recorded instrumentation. You may also use the accompaniment at
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/mq9vxs00fapuj9y/AACz2AmvDlI1cUDVKF-SvfTga?dl=0 .

Additionally, prepare the sides for the character of your choice at
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/mq9vxs00fapuj9y/AACz2AmvDlI1cUDVKF-SvfTga?dl=0 . If a reader is not accessible to you, you may perform a monologue in the style of the show.

We also recognize that the characters are written on the binary (use she/her and he/him pronouns) and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with. In reference to the descriptions below – these are descriptions of the characters as identified in the script and in collaboration with the creative team. They are not meant to be exhaustive of who should play these roles and we seek to cast expansively and intentionally with consideration of race/ethnicity, gender, body type, and ability.

Soon, Orpah, the award winning Soul singer, will arrive to record her live Gospel album in the church. In the interim, there is a boycott, the threat of a foreclosure, and a sororal feud over whose voice is on the demo that launched her career.

RUTH (Black female, mid 30s) eldest daughter of Fowler, devout, shy but strong singer, soprano.
