Synopsis of The Golden Dragon:
An agonizing toothache launches a tragicomic tale set in a Pan Asian restaurant located in an unnamed Western city. Five actors plays 15 characters as the tooth magically weaves together the lives of the immigrant kitchen workers, their customers and neighbors during the heat and frenzy of the dinner rush. This high energy, kaleidoscopic play explores issues of alienation and integration in contemporary globalized society.
Note: Seeking Actors with special facility in heightened language and quick comedic instincts. Humor and pathos. All actors must be physically fit as there will be a lot of movement. Experience with movement-based practice (Lecoq, Viewpoints, dance), devised theatre or Brecht a plus. Training in stage fighting / combat desirable. Seeking real collaborators to create actor-driven physical theatre. Note that all characters in the play are purposefully against physical type (race, gender, age). Actors should be comfortable with non fourth-wall theatre and interacting with the audience as this will be an immersive theatre experience.
YOUNG MAN:
Over 18 but appears 14-16. To play: The Grandfather (loving to his granddaughter and nostalgic for his youth), Asian Man (a cook / kitchen worker), The Waitress (an Asian server), The Cricket (a happy-go-lucky violinist who is forced into sexual slavery to avoid starving)
OLDER WOMAN:
50s-60s. To play The Granddaughter (loving to her grandfather, unhappily pregnant), Asian Woman (young girl), The Ant (pragmatic and cruel pimp to The Cricket), The Shopkeeper (a little bit of a hoarder, a neighborhood friend, and a drunk)
YOUNG WOMAN:
Late Teens-Early 20s. To play The Man with the Striped Shirt (an alcoholic with a violent streak who is being left by his wife), Asian Man with Toothache (new illegal immigrant in search of his missing sister and, due to an agonizing toothache, a good screamer), The Barbie-Fucker (good-looking boyfriend to Eva, Second Stewardess)
OLDER MAN:
50s-60s. To play: A Young Man (a cruel John who takes out his aggression on The Cricket), Asian Man (a cook / kitchen worker), Second Stewardess (happy in her relationship and generally a good friend and roommate to the Second Stewardess; her name is Eva)
MAN:
30s to Early 40s (needs to look great in a dress – comfort with or some drag experience preferable). To play: The Woman in the Dress (a gorgeous wife who has The Man with the Striped Shirt wrapped around her little finger but is leaving him), Asian Man (a cook / kitchen worker), First Stewardess (a pretty blonde, lost and alone in the world, craves human connection; her name is Inga, maybe she’s Swedish)
