Breakdown

ABOUT: THE FILM SOCIETY is set in a provincial South African boarding school for whites in 1970. After the school is embroiled in controversy, a young teacher (Jonathon Balton) must decide whether to side with an activist friend (Terry Sinclair) or align himself with the Establishment

SEEKING
JONATHON BALTON (Male 30’s) Apolitical teacher at the boarding school who does not rock the boat; lost in old films at the start of the play, he becomes part of the establishment by the end; good sense of humor and does not take life too seriously; unkempt at the top; a spoiled mama’s boy.

NAN SINCLAIR (Female 30’s) Terry’s wife, fierce intelligence, practical with a good sense of self; a good teacher and friend; can stand up to her husband and those around her; healthy sense of humor; students like her.

TERRY SINCLAIR (Male 30’s) Nan’s husband, a political activist who does not always have two feet on the ground or understand consequences; idealistic and intellectual; comes from old money; impulsive; a dryer sense of humor; a good teacher.

MRS. BALTON (Female late 50’s to 60”s) Jonathon’s mother and a widow; keeper of the old guard; smart, wily and manipulative; cares deeply for her son and the family’s legacy.

NEVILLE SUTTER (Male 60’s )– The headmaster, tactful and political, yet not always practical; tired from his years of running the school; warm; seen it all. George Bush to Fox’s Dick Cheney;

HAMISH FOX (Male 60’s) Assistant headmaster dying of cancer; tough and acerbic; defender of the old ways of doing things; meticulous; the establishment. Dick Cheney to Sutter’s George Bush.
