BREAKDOWN

Dionysus: Early 30’s-40’s, any genders. Dionysus is the son of a mortal woman, Semele, and the male god, Zeus. A true rock star, with magnetic charisma and sex appeal. Dionysus defies categories and is masculine and feminine. Joyful and vicious. Must have a command of heightened language and a strong singer.

Pentheus: 20’s-30’s, Male. A young king, son of Agave and cousin of Dionysus, is opposed to the new Dionysian religion spreading throughout Thebes, although he finds the new religion intriguing. Strong, powerful and unbending. Must have a command of heightened language.

Cadmus: 50’s, Male. Cadmus has stepped down from the throne to hand the kingdom over to his grandson, Pentheus. Sage, regal and must have a command of heightened language.

Tiresias: 50’s-60’s, Male. The oracle of Thebes who provides many warnings to Pentheus, all of which go unheeded. Noble and passionate. Must have a mastery of classical text.

Agave: 40’s-50’s, Female. Agave has been taken over by the god Dionysus, who is angry with her for rejecting his divinity and telling a lie about his mother, Agave's sister, Semele, who died before Dionysus was born. Dynamic and nimble.

Messenger: 20’s-30’s, all genders. The messenger is a cattle herder who tells Pentheus about the Bacchants’ violent behavior on Mount Cithaeron and neighboring villages. Comic timing is a must.
