Seeking:

THE 39 STEPS is the Tony Award-winning play that had a highly successful three-year run at the Roundabout, Cort, and Helen Hayes Theatres, as well as Off Broadway. It is a theatrical staging of the famous 1935 Alfred Hitchcock film that involves murder, intrigue, espionage, and romance. Set in 1935 London and Scotland, the style is not camp, but satire done in high style. The two clowns play their multiple roles like an expert vaudeville team, in music hall style, thoroughly enjoying themselves as they make their quick changes--and they are not above letting the audience see that enjoyment. A company of four actors play all of the roles. All actors must be superb technicians who can create many different characters and utilize many different accents. The transitions from character to character are completely seamless with no makeup, minimal costume changes, and a set which consists of little more than a door and a few chairs. This is a highly physical show for all four actors.

Richard Hannay
Male, mid 30s – early 40s; an attractive, world travelled and world weary Englishman in the manner of Ronald Coleman/Robert Donat; an Everyman caught up, by circumstance, in mystery, murder, and espionage.

Annabella Schmidt/Margaret/Pamela
Female, mid 20s – mid 30s. Seeking versatile actress to portray a mysterious and seductive European spy, a simple, Scottish farmer’s wife, and a plucky, resourceful and intrepid young English woman.

Clowns 1 and 2
Two versatile actors capable of playing a variety of specific roles with a variety of British accents, all grounded in reality and honesty. They are not “clowns” in the circus sense, but in the style of the English Music Hall/Vaudeville “quick change” acts, with split second timing and inventiveness.
