Breakdown
DONNA McAULIFFE:
Early 30s. Any ethnicity. A young mother who has had two infants die under similar, questionable circumstances, resulting in the breakup of her marriage, her incarceration, and a media circus. Warm and likeable; witty. The events that precede the play have left her raw and vulnerable. Though the official verdict is not in, the enormous loss and stress have taken their toll.
LYNNE BARRIE:
Mid 50s. Any ethnicity. Donna’s mother. A successful politician who has been forced to bow out of the public eye as a result of the tabloid onslaught surrounding her daughter. Attractive and charming. Always well-put-together. Witty, ambitious, and determined. Loves a party and is comfortable being the center of attention. Not a heartless operator, but definitely a born politician.
DR. MILLARD:
Late 40s-late 50s. A psychologist whose diagnosis of Donna’s “Leeman-Keatley Syndrome” is largely responsible for her acquittal. Intellectually ambitious and quite passionate about his work, but not a shiny, arrogant doctor. He’s more of a slightly downtrodden, menschy underdog. Takes his work very much to heart, and protects himself with a wry sense of humor.
MARTIN McAULIFFE:
Early 30s. Any ethnicity. Donna’s husband. Has separated himself from Donna and wants no part of the tabloid frenzy surrounding all of this. Grief-stricken and angry when we meet him, he is a man who has been blindsided by life and is fighting to hold on to something. Well-manner and kind, he tries to be patient, but has become increasingly defensive.
MAN 1:
Late 40s-early 50s. Plays BRIAN, JIM, MAN, and possibly INTERVIEWER (role assignments TBD).
Versatile actor, able to transition smoothly and clearly from one character to another.
BRIAN – A conservative politician. Leads with a hearty & jovial demeanor. But he’s not afraid to drop it to get down to brass tacks and get the job done. A party functionary.
JIM – Lynn’s campaign manager. A liberal, a true believer in her, and a loyal friend. Kind; the guy just outside the spotlight.
MAN 2:
30s-early 40s. Plays REPORTER, OLD MAN, and possibly INTERVIEWER (role assignments TBD).
Versatile actor, able to transition smoothly and clearly from one character to another. REPORTER – Arrogant, verbal, intellectual. Has an aggressive sense of humor and an ever-present sexual energy.
WOMAN:
40s-50s. Plays MRS. MILLARD, WOMAN, JANE, and WAITRESS.
Versatile actress, able to transition smoothly and clearly from one character to another.
MRS. MILLARD – Wife of Dr. Millard. Reserved, chooses her words carefully, but is keenly aware of her husband’s controversial status.
WAITRESS – Blue collar, hard-working, no nonsense.
