Oregon Shakespeare Festival produces in repertory. Most performers and stage managers work on multiple shows throughout the year. A standard repertory contract includes up to four assignments, including understudies. Actors in ROMEO AND JULIET may also be considered for roles & understudies in TWELFTH NIGHT (3/17/23 – 10/14/23) and understudies in RENT (2/14/23 – 10/15/23)

ABOUT THIS PRODUCTION: One of the most famous stories of young love explodes with intense passion—as two star-crossed lovers from two different families and backgrounds sacrifice all to be together. Set in a homeless encampment in a large west coast city, Artistic Director Nataki Garrett's contemporary production explores the failures of “manifest destiny” through capitalism and class divisions for her first Shakespeare production at OSF.

SEEKING:

Romeo/As Cast: 20s, masculine-presenting, any ethnicity. Child of a rich family who has lost their wealth. Romeo is very quick to love.

Juliet/As Cast: 20s, female, BIPOC/multi-racial. She is from an upwardly mobile family, her eligibility as a bride is a part of her family’s rise to wealth.

Tybalt/As Cast: 20-30s, any gender, BIPOC. Juliet’s short-tempered cousin and a rival to Romeo.

Mercutio/As Cast: 20-30s, any gender, any ethnicity. In Romeo’s crew. Romeo’s best friend.

Montague/As Cast: 40+, masculine-presenting, any ethnicity. Romeo’s parent. The Montague family has lost their wealth under his leadership.

Nurse/Lady Montague/As Cast: 40+, femme-presenting, BIPOC. NURSE - Personal guardian of Juliet and loves her. She helps make the match with Romeo. LADY MONTAGUE - Romeo’s parent.

Capulet/As Cast: 40+, masculine-presenting, any ethnicity. Juliet’s parent. Head of a multi-racial family who formally had impressive wealth.

Lady Capulet/As Cast: 40+, femme-presenting, any ethnicity. Juliet’s parent. Head of a multi-racial family with formerly impressive wealth.

Benvolio/As Cast: 20-30s, any gender, any ethnicity. Connected to both houses and unsuccessfully tries to broker peace between them.

Friar Lawrence/As Cast: 40+, any gender, any ethnicity. A “spiritual guide” trusted by Romeo and Juliet, helps them with the plot to get married.

Balthasar/As Cast: 20s-30s, any gender, any ethnicity. In Romeo’s crew. Deeply loyal to Romeo. Fights with the Capulets. Plays music, ideally guitar or keyboard.

Paris/As Cast: 20-30s, masculine-presenting, white. Has generational wealth and is successful, and a suitor of Juliet. Will double as people who work in the Capulet household.


Prince Escalus/As Cast: 30+, masculine-presenting, white. He holds authority over the two feuding families. Has generational wealth and does not ever have to work.
