Character Breakdown
Actor Track 1
This role has been CAST. (plays Jane/Miss de Bourgh) Female, late 20s-early 30s, open ethnicity. The eldest of the Bennet sisters, Jane is unassuming, kind, and generous-hearted. Considered to be the daughter most likely to make a good match, Jane bears the burden of the family connections and financial future. She almost instantly falls in love with Bingley and his enthusiasm. She has a strong sense of duty that prevents her from pursuing her true desires. Through the play she discovers her own independence and desires and makes the decision to seize control of her relationship with Bingley. Lady Catherine’s daughter Miss de Bourgh is a somewhat frightening creature, who never quite manages to articulate more than one word at a time. The Miss de Bourgh is quite pampered, snobbish, and self-important. Both roles require a RP dialect.
Actor Track 2
(plays Lizzy) Female, late 20s-early 30s, open ethnicity. Independent, proud, and outspoken, Lizzy Bennet is determined not to marry, but instead to forge her own path. Naturally witty, Lizzy often uses humor as a way to deflect her insecurities, to cheer her friends, or cut someone down to size. She is fiercely loyal and sometimes oversteps her bounds to protect them. Although quite intelligent, Lizzy can get easily flustered by romance, which manifests in an awkward klutziness. Because of her fear of marriage and her innate cynicism, Lizzy hesitates to reveal her vulnerabilities and heart to Darcy. Requires a RP Dialect.
Actor Track 3
(plays Lydia/Lady Catherine) Female, early - mid 20s, open ethnicity. The youngest daughter of the Bennet family, Lydia is impetuous, boy-crazy, and incredibly competitive with her sisters. Lydia is prone to stealing alcoholic drinks at balls and eavesdropping. She often argues with her mother’s advice or ignores it completely. For all her faults, she is fun-loving and the life of the party. Lady Catherine is a fierce matriarch who is used to getting her own way. A strong personality, she is demanding and imperious. Lady Catherine is determined that Darcy should marry her daughter and will eradicate anyone who impedes that from taking place. Requires a RP Dialect.
Actor Track 4
(Mr. Darcy) Male, late 20s - late 30s. Darcy is often hampered by his own sense of propriety and his overwhelming shyness. He believes strongly in following the rules of society and disapproves of those who step out of line. Although deeply sensitive, his outward demeanor comes off as aloof and distant. A classic introvert, he fears social embarrassment and has difficulty starting conversations with unfamiliar people. Darcy is fiercely loyal to his friends and family and endeavors to honorably conduct himself in business and in personal affairs. He has difficulty telling lies -- even white lies. Darcy also has a quiet and intelligent wit, which is invigorated by sparring with Lizzy. Requires a RP Dialect.
Actor Track 5
(Mr. Collins/Mr. Wickham/Miss Bingley) Open gender, late 20s - mid 30s, open ethnicity. Pedantic and self-important, Mr. Collins is “the original mansplainer”. He reverently adores his patron, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, and demands that everyone else do so as well. Mr. Collins is a bit sweaty and slimy, but believes himself to be quite a catch. Mr. Wickham, on the other hand, is effortlessly handsome and charming with a bad-boy edge. He is comfortable in his own skin, even when he is in the wrong. Sensual and proud, Mr. Wickham manipulates the world around him to get what he wants. The beautiful and disdainful Miss Bingley wants to seduce and marry Darcy, but is constantly stymied by Lizzy. She can be subtle and witty, but also cruel. Miss Bingley is at the top of the social ladder and is determined to keep it that way. Requires a RP Dialect.
Actor Track 6
(Mr. Bingley/Mary) Open gender, late 20s - late 30s, open ethnicity. Mr. Bingley enthusiastically pursues happiness with all the excitement of a glorious Labrador retriever, including chasing after balls. He thinks the world of Darcy and Darcy’s opinions, sometimes to Bingley’s own detriment. Although open-hearted, Bingley has difficulty articulating his affections to Jane, perhaps because of the depth of his feelings for her. A goth girl trapped in Regency England, Mary is maudlin, pedantic, and self-important. She believes herself above her sisters’ petty concerns about marriage, but would secretly like attention herself. Mary is quite frightening when she comes upon someone unawares. Mary coughs like she has consumption and likely fancies herself to be a romantic heroine. Requires a RP Dialect.
Actor Track 7
(Charlotte/Mr. Bennett) Male, early 40s - mid 50s, open ethnicity. One of Lizzy’s dearest friends, Charlotte is a realist about matrimony and is willing to compromise for financial security. Perhaps conscious of not being a beautiful as her friends, Charlotte has cultivated a dry wit and a steadfast sense of self. Even her deep patience is challenged by Mr. Collins and she must reach to maintain her composure and calm in the face of his annoying behavior. Although he loves his family, Mr. Bennett copes with the overwhelming energy of his household by disappearing into his study or behind his ever-present newspaper. Mr. Bennett enjoys dropping information bombs on his family with a dry wit and riling up his wife. He can be a bit depressed and disappointed in life. Although he blames himself for his daughters’ misbehavior, Mr. Bennett remains rather apathetic until there is no other choice. Requires a RP Dialect.
Actor Track 8
(Mrs. Bennett/Servants) Female, early 40s - late 50s, open ethnicity. Melodramatic and impossible to ignore, Mrs. Bennett is a whirlwind of energy and noise. She is bawdy, bossy, and an unapologetic gossip. Fiercely competitive with the other mothers, Mrs. Bennett is determined that her daughters will score the best husbands on the marriage mart. She is prone to being overdramatic, but truly does care for her children and husband. This actor also plays a variety of exceedingly proper servants, including the rather snooty servant of Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Requires a RP Dialect.
