PLEASE NOTE: unless otherwise specified, for all roles we are actively seeking and welcoming of actors of any ethnicity, race, gender/gender identification/gender expression, and physical and neurological ability.

SUZANNE ALEXANDER (YOUNGER SUZANNE/ PRESENT-DAY SUZANNE): CAST: (Audra McDonald) Female; Black; late 40s/early 50s. YOUNGER: a young writing student attending Ohio State College. PRESENT-DAY: the same writer visiting her alma mater to give a talk about the origins and imagery in her work.

ROBERT HAMPSHIRE: White. Early-late 30’s. Bookish first-year English literature professor whose class (and who himself) inspires the young Suzanne; always dresses rather formally in tweed suits with a vest, glasses; beneath his unadorned, no-nonsense demeanor and seemingly dispassionate approach to his lectures (walks wordlessly to the podium, no introductions, starts the lectures) runs anger, joy and vitality that galvanize Suzanne and his other students. The first to see in Suzanne the great talent and potential she possesses. Also embarks on a romantic relationship with the young Suzanne.

DAVID ALEXANDER/ VAL: Black or bi-racial. 30’s. DAVID: a law student who Suzanne marries. Tender and decent, attractive and athletic (most likely a cross country guy) VAL: a University friend of SUZANNE’s many mistook for the father of her twins.

MRS TYLER/ MISS DAWSON/ AUNT LOU: Female; Black; mid 50’s – late 60s. AUNT LOU: SUZANNE’s warm and caring, supportive but direct and no-nonsense aunt. MRS TYLER: SUZANNE’s landlady; asks no questions when a single Suzanne rents a room with her children. MISS DAWSON: head of the younger SUZANNE’s dorm; a rather severe older woman who goes into Suzanne’s room, reads her diaries, poems and essays, and enlists the dormitory committee to expel Suzanne for being morally unsuitable for Ohio State

IRIS ANN: Female; Black; early-mid 20’s. YOUNGER SUZANNE’s college roommate and friend. Heartbroken over her broken engagement to her fiancé.
