BREAKDOWN
MRS. HOWARD V. LARUE III: 35-50; soprano with strong belt (A-flat below middle C, possibly through high C); dizzy, jaded millionaires; a cross between Bernadette Peters and Madeline Kahn; a highly attractive widow with warmth and pluck.
POISON EDDIE SCHELLENBACH: 35-50; high baritone to tenor (C below middle C through A-flat above middle C); blustery chief gangster among a gang of would-be mobsters; a cross between James Cagney, Seth Rogen, and Ben Stiller.
HOWAY / STICK BOY: 12-15; “Oliver!” range (B below middle C through F below high C); must double as Howay, Mrs. Larue’s son, and his exact facsimile, the Stick Boy; Howay is a tough brat with the tinge of sweetness, à la the young Macaulay Culkin; the Stick Boy is an abominably well-behaved, stiff lad with the aura of “the bad seed.”
MIMI: 12-15; “Annie” range (B below middle C through F below high C); a strange, totally ingenuous waif, reminiscent of Charles Addams’ Wednesday, Rudy Huxtable, or Charles Dickens’ Little Nell; a beautiful human child adopted by a witch; pushy, even a bit brassy in her quest for human friendship.
EVVA LEWIS / MRS. McTHING: 35-50; mezzo-soprano (good G below middle C through good G below high C); must double as the social prig, Evva Lewis, and the mysterious witch, Mrs. McThing; Evva Lewis is a gregarious, leeching windbag and fair weather friend; Mrs. McThing is a glamorously manic Talllulah Bankhead or Eartha Kitt type, an ubiquitous witch who can shift from terrifying to tender at the drop of a broom.
CHEF (ELLSWORTH): 35-45; bass to basso profundo (down to low E-flat if possible); imposing gangsters who make a living as a fussy chef; Chuck Cooper or Ving Rhames type.
STINKER: 30-45; tenor (low B-flat through high B-flat); a ludicrous bully and sidekick to Poison Eddie; Leo Gorcey/Jonah Hill type gangster.
VIRGIL: 30-40; high baritone (low A-flat through G above middle C); lanky, goofy waiter- gangster; possibly plays piano; Huntz Hall/Art Carney type.
CARRIE: 25-35; bluesy mezzo-soprano or contralto with. High range (G below middle C to G below high C); knowing, mystical confident/head of household; must double in other roles; Charlayne Woodard type with a Nina Simone voice.
NELSON: 20-40: baritone; MRS. LaRUE’s chauffeur.
ENSEMBLE: 25-35; ethnically mixed, who dance and sing well; will play a variety of small roles.
