Breakdown

Billie Holiday Cover
African-American Woman. Mid to late thirties. Billie
is strikingly beautiful. Lady Day, as she is called, has a unique and soulful style of singing. Her masterful interpretation of music makes her one of a kind. Her voice and phrasing has been acclaimed as the jazz voice of the 20th century. She is unaware of the profound impact her extraordinary talent will have on the history of music. The character of Billie Holiday in this musical play is fully committed to her emotions and song. She is complex; tough and tender, fragile but strong. She is passionate, sincere and believes fully in her convictions. At times she over exaggerates but it is innocent with aspiration, the desire to self-protect and avoid fear. When she laughs it’s rich and full. She is witty with raw, sharp humor. She can laugh at herself without shame. When upset she is heated and emotional.

Robert:
Caucasian Male. Mid-twenties to mid-thirties. He is Billie’s confidant andvoice of reason. He wants what is best for her and is protective of Holiday. He is gentle, but strong when needed. He never humiliates. Everything he does for Billie is done with love, respect and deep friendship. He possesses good looks, but is not self-aware of his attractiveness.

Assistant Stage Manager/Rafaeil:
Male. Mid-twenties to mid 40’s of Spanish/European descent. A team player and a dedicated worker.

The role of Billie Holiday has been cast.
