Breakdown
Gustave, Philippe, and Henri – war heroes all – are plotting an escape. They’ve had enough of the tortures of their confinement: murderous captors, untrustworthy fellow prisoners, and far too many birthday parties… Indeed, life in a retired soldiers home is almost unbearable! So, while driving each other crazy on the back patio, they hatch a plan to escape to Indochina, or a grand picnic, or at least to a grove of poplar trees at the top of a windblown hill nearby. Winner of London’s prestigious Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, Tom Stoppard’s adaptation of this charming French play is playful, bawdy and heartbreakingly funny. Seeking: Henri: a resident of the veterans’ home for decades, is a romantic at heart, hindered by a lost leg and the occasional bout of practicality. Philippe: a resident for nearly a decade, is a paranoid, loveable goofball with a piece of shrapnel lodged in his brain that makes him prone to fainting spells and slightly inappropriate advisements to “attack from the rear.” Gustav: the newest addition to the trio, is a well-coiffed scoundrel and confidence man, bound by agoraphobia and post-traumatic stress syndrome Theatre states: “All ethnicities are encouraged to audition. The theatre is especially interested in seeing New Jersey resident actors. No housing is available to out-of-area performers. Theatre is required to offer one Equity contract for this season. All roles available.” Transit Note: Theatre states that the venue is accessible by bus (190 from Port Authority Bus Terminal) and train from NYC.
