BREAKDOWN

Doubling to be decided in casting.

SOPHIE WASHINGTON – A Black woman, born into slavery, 36. A resilient woman. Determined to make the most of a chance at independence. Physically and emotionally strong, she tends to lack feminine graces. She envisions an all-Black town complete with schools, churches, and libraries.

MISS LEAH (already cast) – A Black woman, born into slavery, 73. She moved in with Sophie, Fannie and Minnie after she was too ill to take care of her farm alone. Gave birth to and lost many children, whether to slavery or the harsh winters in Kansas. One of the original homesteaders of Nicodemus, she and her husband came west with the first settlers. Now widowed and alone, she is the storyteller who keeps their oral history alive.

FANNIE DOVE – A Black woman, 32. Born after slavery ended, she came to Nicodemus as a child, and is proud to be part of creating a new Black community in the West. She and the other women run a successful farm and have achieved self-sufficiency.

FRANK CHARLES – A very light-skinned Black man, born into slavery, 36. A product of a white slave-owner and one of his slaves. Until recently, has lived comfortably off of the generous allowance afforded him by his father. He regards himself as sophisticated and elite, and he has no respect for the difficult life on the western plains.

MINNIE DOVE CHARLES – A Black woman, 21. She was educated back East and has spent a couple of years in Europe with her older husband, Frank. She admires and loves her husband, making excuses for both his disrespect for her family, and his physical and emotional abuse of her, even after it is discovered she is pregnant.

WIL PARISH – A Black man, born into slavery, 40. Runaway slave who was raised by the Seminole in Florida and has spent most of his adult life in Mexico. Now the local blacksmith, he goes out of his way to help the women do odd jobs around the farm.

CAMILLE - A poor needleworker who becomes a notorious courtesan. She passes up a chance to become mistress to Count de Varville because she loves a younger man, Armand Duval. For her lover’s sake, she finally leaves him because her liaison is hurting his family. She then dies of consumption, regretting what might have been.

ARMAND DUVAL - A young man who has nothing but love to offer Camille. They become lovers. He thinks she has deserted him, until on her deathbed she tells him she left him for his own good and that of his family.

MONSIEUR DUVAL - Armand’s father. He pleads with Camille to leave his son so that Armand and his family will not suffer in their reputations.

COUNT DE VARVILLE - A French nobleman in love with Camille. He offers to pay all her debts if she becomes his mistress. He becomes her lover after she leaves Armand Duval. He and Armand fight a duel, in which the count is wounded.

GASTON – A member of Camille’s social circle, provides comic relief occasionally, attends to Camille when she is dying.

GUSTAVE – Friend of Camille’s, Nichette’s fiancé.

MADAME PRUDENCE DUVERNAY - A milliner, Camille’s friend. She introduces Armand to Camille.

OLYMPE –Camille’s rival, selfish and coquettish. Jealous of Camille and Armand’s love.

NICHETTE – Camille’s faithful friend who marries Gustave.

NANINE - Camille’s faithful caretaker.
