FLYIN WEST, by Pearle Cleage Mainstage
Seeking:
Minnie Dove Charles - 21. The baby sister, the “pretty” sister, the pampered sister. Sweet and loving. Works hard to hide that she is trapped with an abusive husband.
Fannie Dove - 32. The family peacemaker; tries to see the best in everything and everyone. A bit of a spinster – claims to be “just “friends” with Wil, but secretly hopes for more. Someone who obeys the rules and traditions – but also pragmatic.
Sophie Washington - 36. The family protector. A strong, powerful woman, both physically and emotionally. A visionary with a plan for her family and a plan for her community. Does not tolerate fools or condescension.
Miss Leah - 73. Frail, unsteady on her legs, but determined not to rely on others too much. Formerly enslaved person—she has survived great loss. a feisty woman who demands respect and speaks her mind—fearless, a great storyteller.
Wil Parish - 40. Hard-working, respectful—a good man. Very slowly and carefully working himself up to properly court Miss Fannie. Strong and willing to do what needs to be done.
Frank Charles - 36. Light-skinned—character is often mistaken for a white man. His father was a slave owner, and in his heart, he thinks of himself as white. Contemptuous of all black people. A veneer of urbane charm hiding his true character. A bad temper always ready to explode, an abusive husband.
