EUGENE O'NEILL THEATRE CENTER 2024-2025 SUMMER SEASON

NATIONAL PLAYWRIGHTS CONFERENCE

MADRE DE DIOS

by Marvin González De León

NOTE: All roles are open to people of all ethnic backgrounds, body types, etc. – the play should feel like a representation of the world. The cast should be filled with actors who can play against text, find the humor in the sad, the sadness in the joke.

SEEKING:

Marisol – Late 50s/Early 60s. Mexicana. Uninhabited buildings crumble because no one breathes life into them; Marisol keeps her family from crumbling that way.

Moisés – 32. Mexicano. Noé’s twin. He is all sound and fury signifying all that is unsound with him.

Noé– 32. Mexicano. Moisés’s twin. Paralyzed. He wears a lifetime of addiction like a contracting spider skin that he can’t cast off.

Traveler – 30. Filipina. Though she looks like she comes from central casting for Furiosa, inside she possesses a soft glow, a warmth that disarms.

YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO THE END OF THE WORLD!

By Keiko Green

SEEKING:

M - non-binary, AMAB, 20. The star. Our MC. Swinging wildly between pissed and mystical, maybe mythical. Sometimes in control of the narrative, sometimes being swept away by the story. An aspiring drag queen. M has a giant heart that is easy to hurt, so they choose to protect themselves with lots of boundaries… which slowly crumble over the course of the play.

GREG - male, 40s-50s. M's father. The earth. Clumsily making his way through this world. A terminal diagnosis brings out a complicated core of wants and desires and regrets. He starts the play in denial of his position, finds a surprising purpose, shuts everyone out in pursuit of his passions, then somehow manages to inspire everyone in his life.

VIV - female, 40s-50s. M's mother. The space between. Slightly neurotic and easy to get riled up, she wants with all her might to spend her last days with Greg, alone in a bed with M by their side. As a control-freak, Greg’s diagnosis is unbearable, and she feels an immense amount of guilt: could she have stopped this in some way? But also – somehow she’s still kind of funny in her coldness.

NOTE: Ensemble roles all require performers with a great sense of humor, a big range, and a readiness to jump in with big choices:

ENSEMBLE A - female, 20s-30s:

Greta Thunberg - a magical, fairy-version of the teen climate activist.

Shelly - an overly emotional young woman at Viv’s support group.

Lila - 30s, Viv’s younger sister.

Kathy - 40, the Murphy’s no-nonsense outdoorsy neighbor

ENSEMBLE B - male, 20s-30s:

TV Narrator - British narrator of a nature documentary, factual and a little accusatory. Frank - the pushover counselor at Viv’s support group.

Will - 20’s, M’s boyfriend. Makes himself small until time to rant about climate change.

Kev - 40, M’s boss, owner/manager of the local gay bar, The Spot.

Army Guy - late 30s, terrifyingly aggressive as he spouts facts. Has seen some shit. Melomys - ageless. An Australian rat, who is pissed about his extinction.

ENSEMBLE C - female, 50s-60s:

Dr. Thomas - 50, Greg’s doctor. Not great in social situations/bed side manner. Cold. Janet - 60, No filter. An older lesbian, who is dealing with a dying partner.

Door Dash Gal - 20, just wants to drop off the food, please.

Suzie - 40s, The Murphy’s neighbor, very upset with Greg.

Toad - ageless. A Costa Rican toad, who is devastated about extinction.

HURT PEOPLE

by LaDarrion Williams

SEEKING:

Marcel Bennett - A Black man that's approaching the big 30. A deep thinker. He is a best-selling author who has come home to write his next book. But, of course, he struggles with it. Because he struggles with the past. And now it's bleeding into his present and future.

Brandon McCarter - Black man. 30. Country boy. The one who stayed behind in a small town. He moves through life with a sadness. But he presses on. Him and Marcel have been friends since they were in middle school. Yes, this Black man is masculine. Not toxic. But he operates in the masculine realm.

Keisha Jackson - Black woman. A good woman, too. Supportive. Loyal. She loves Marcel with everything that she has.

Black Woman - Black woman podcaster She brings a sudden change, wanted or not. Black Man - A Black Man podcaster who created Sip Talkin' . Fiery passion. Overtly masculine.

LIGHTHOUSE

Book and Lyrics by abs wilson

Music by Veronica Mansour

Story by abs wilson and Veronica Mansour

SEEKING:

BUS (alto/mezzo) - 18, female Eb3- F5 (belt). Graduated high school last year and currently in her gap year, with plans to escape town the first chance she gets. Bus controls the narrative in breaking the 4th wall and directing the lens of the story. Deeply teenager, very deadpan sense of humor, and kind of an asshole but also maybe one of the most charismatic people you know. Thinks she’s real punk, probably wears boots with chains and totally wasn’t an anxious straight-A student in the past psh duh. She has OCD but doesn’t want you to know that. Lives life like she’s had 5 espresso shots and ran 3 laps but like in a chill way. Doesn’t want you to know that, either. Much more self-aware than you’d think. Definitely doesn’t want you to know that.

CHEESE CURD (alto/mezzo) “Cheese” - 36, female E3 - E5. Bus’s mom and owner of the family dairy store (specializing in its cheese). A single mother, she has an antagonistic relationship with her own mother, and these days sometimes also with Bus. She has a complicated relationship with food and control. Deals with a lot, and it shows. Also cares a lot. Which shows, but not always in the way she wants. Has the sense of humor it takes to raise a Bus. Probably in some ways used to be the “cool mom” until something began to shift recently.

HOTDISH (alto) - 21, female D3 - Eb5. Bus’ close friend, mom of a young baby, and married to a youth pastor. She maybe has feelings for Church, but doesn’t know if she can leave her marriage or have the courage to admit her sexuality. Known for being extremely likable and kind, she’s spent her whole life being small. She’s Bus’ best friend. . . but Bus isn’t hers. The kind of person you think you know until you realize you don’t know them at all. Under the warmth has something deeply tense, deeply wounded, and deeply bitter festering.

CHURCH (mezzo, optionally plays guitar) - 23, female E3 - E5. Bus’ older frenemy/bully, the golden child of the town now trapped in a cycle of running away and coming back. She has feelings for Hotdish, but doesn’t know if she’s stable enough to act on those feelings. Granola Christian girl. Still cool as hell. Knows how to be exactly who you want her to be, and for it, is also excellent at seeing through your bullshit. As much as they both pretend to the contrary, like an older sister to Bus.

SNOW (mezzo) - 54, female/non-male E5 - F5 (non-belt/float). Bus’ neurologist and neighbor, she becomes an alternate mother figure to Bus— not close to anyone, despite her seemingly sweet if not very awkward exterior. Just extremely stressed always. Melanie Lynskey vibes. Struggles with undiagnosed OCD that keeps her trapped in her own head. She sees herself in Bus, and it’s like hope— or maybe a fraying lifeline. Immensely tragic, but not for the reasons you’d assume.

10,000 LAKES (alto) “Lake” - 73, female D3 - D5. Bus’s grandma and stormchaser. She has a strained relationship with her daughter Cheese, but a good if not slightly distant one with Bus. Left leaning and proud to be the town’s pariah. She’d rather be true to herself even if it means not having a place in the town’s community. Her husband drowned a long time ago— no one knows exactly what happened, and maybe that fact is even worse than him dying. Absolutely hilarious— and knows it. She is everything, possibly even god. Or just your grandma.
