BREAKDOWN

PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Please film your audition in front of a clean background, with no backlighting. As much as possible, limit ambient noise including air conditioners and other electronics. We recommend you do not use Bluetooth headphones, as it can sometimes cause a delay in the audio. Use a secondary audio source to play the accompaniment music so that it is audible in the tape.

Please include a full-body slate at the beginning of your video. Prepare the track for the role you are auditioning for at https://tinyurl.com/DEHCasting OR a brief pop/rock song of your choice. If submitting for an understudy role, you only need to prepare one character’s provided material.

We are committed to inclusive and equitable casting for all roles in Dear Evan Hansen and are actively seeking people of all races, cultural backgrounds, abilities, and gender identities to audition. The breakdowns below refer to the characters as they are written in the Dear Evan Hansen script and are not meant to limit the actors we’re looking to cast in the roles. The vocal ranges indicate how the score was written, but should not be considered a limitation when auditioning. We are interested in working with all voices and we welcome actors of all vocal ranges and registers to submit for the roles below.

Seeking:

Evan Hansen (17): Strong Pop Vocalist, G2-B4. Smart, sincere, and painfully self-conscious, Evan prefers to hover in the background, a supporting player in his own life, too afraid to step forward into the spotlight and risk ridicule or, what might be worse, no one noticing him at all.

Zoe Murphy (16): Strong Pop Vocalist, F3-E5 (belt). A sensitive, sophisticated high school junior. Cool without realizing it, Zoe could care less about the status games and popularity rites of high school. Funny and bright, she has grown up in the long shadow cast by her volatile older brother, Connor, tyrannized along with the rest of her family by his out-of-control behavior. Few rooms are as familiar to her as the inside of a family therapist’s office. Zoe compensates for her brother’s darkness by striving to be warm, nice to everyone, the kind of person who goes out of her way to learn the names of the kids who sit by themselves at lunch. She feels a terrible ambivalence over her brother’s death, finding it difficult to forgive him for all he did, and at the same time forgive that part of herself that feels nothing but relief in the fact that he’s gone.

Alana Beck (17): Strong Pop Vocalist, F3-E5 (belt). A diligent, conscientious, straight-A high school senior, Alana is a do-gooder and a rule follower. Her acute self-awareness and social anxiety make it difficult to connect with others. Beneath her extroverted demeanor, she is in fact haunted by a terrible and abiding loneliness. Alana seizes the death of a classmate as an opportunity finally to find a sense of belonging. Well-intentioned and self-effacing, Alana is transformed by her fixation on the tragedy.

Connor Murphy (17): Strong Pop Vocalist, G2-G4. An angry, disaffected loner, Connor has been a troubled kid for as long as anyone can remember, an enigma and a source of endless consternation to his long-suffering parents.

Jared Kleinman (17): Strong Pop Vocalist, A2-B4 G4. Droll and sarcastic, Jared carries himself with the kind of practiced swagger only the deeply insecure can truly pull off. He is forced by his parents to hang out with family friend Evan, for whom he claims to have nothing but disdain. Jared masks his self-doubt with braggadocio and a know-it-all arrogance.

Heidi Hansen (40s): Strong Pop Vocalist, F3-Eb5 (belt). Evan’s mother. Overworked and stretched too thin, Heidi loves her son fiercely, but fears they have begun to grow apart. She is prepared to do anything to repair the damage.

Cynthia Murphy (40s): Strong Pop Vocalist, F#3-E5 (belt). Connor and Zoe’s mother. To Evan, she seems to be the perfect mother, nurturing, available, and willing to talk about anything. To her own children, it’s a bit more complicated.

Larry Murphy (40s): Strong Pop Vocalist, F#2-G4. Connor and Zoe’s father. Though often tense and taciturn, Larry shows a different face to the world, representing for Evan the dad he always wished for: strong, confident, and more than anything, reliable, someone to be counted on.

Understudy 1 & 2: Will understudy the roles of Cynthia and Heidi (40’s): Heidi Hansen (40s): Strong Pop Vocalist, F3-Eb5 (belt). Evan’s mother.
