BREAKDOWN
CABARET (Broadway)
SEEKING:
EMCEE - The host at the Kit Kat Club. Comedic, magnetic and loveable but embraces the dark tendencies of humankind. Strong physicality. Tenor.
SALLY BOWLES - A British Cabaret performer and the headliner at Berlin's Kit Kat Club. To the outside world, Sally is eccentric, compelling, vivacious, and outrageous - a true free spirit with an artist’s soul. But under her flashy facade, she is far more complicated than she appears. Soprano with a strong belt.
CLIFF BRADSHAW - Character portrayed is male, mid 20s-early 30s. An American novelist and English teacher traveling to Berlin. A closeted gay man exploring his sexuality by escaping to Europe. The role is based on Christopher Isherwood. Wit, charisma, presence, and depth. Artists whose own sexuality may connect with that of Isherwood are encouraged to audition. Baritone.
FRAULEIN SCHNEIDER - Character portrayed is female, early 50s-early 70s. A landlady who rents rooms in her large flat. She is wise and worn but with real sparkle and humor. A survivor and a cynic, she carries a sadness with her from years as a lone wolf but also possesses humor and genuine affection for Cliff. Loving Herr Schultz and choosing to risk getting engaged could cost her everything, but what price does happiness cost? Alto with strong belt.
HERR SCHULTZ - Character portrayed is male, early 50s-early 70s. One of Fraulein Schneider’s roomers and the owner of a fruit shop. Similar age as Schneider, or slightly younger, he is warm, kind, endearing but not sentimental. There is a survivor here too. Artists who have a connection to the Jewish faith are encouraged to audition. High baritone.
FRAULEIN 'FRITZI’ KOST - Character portrayed is female, late 40s-early 50s. Fraulein Kost is a survivor. A sex worker and lodger in Fraulein Schneider's boarding house, she makes things work. A world-weary pragmatist - the winning side is her side and is ready to swap alliances for whatever grass is the greener. Fritzi is also one of the core Kit Kat Ensemble and thus requires outstanding dance skills. Mezzo-soprano with strong belt.
ERNST LUDWIG - Character portrayed is male, late 20s-mid 30s. Life and soul, dependable yet enigmatic, he takes English lessons from Cliff. He’s Cliff’s first ‘true’ friend upon arrival to Berlin. Everyone knows him, everyone loves him. He appears witty, charming and warm but, ultimately, a Nazi. Baritone.
