Performances are Thur through Sat evenings with matinees on Wed, Sun and some Sat for five to seven shows/week. Some weekday student matinees may be added.

Arvada CO - The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities will be accepting video auditions for its 2021-2022 Black Box repertory season starting on May 24, 2021 with deadline for video submissions on June 4, 2021. Some casting will be for ensemble positions; these actors will be cast in two or three repertory productions. There are also some roles that will be for a single production. Actors must be 18 years & older to audition. The Arvada Center is located at 6901 Wadsworth Blvd. in Arvada, CO

ARVADA CENTER 2021-2022 BLACK BOX REPERTORY SEASON
Character breakdown of available roles:

Sylvia
Description: Greg and Kate have moved to Manhattan after twenty-two years of child-raising. One day, Greg brings home a dog he has found—or that has found him—bearing only the name “Sylvia” on her tag. A street-smart mixture of Lab and Poodle, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife.

SYLVIA (18-35) Sylvia is a poodle-lab mix who loves her new friend, Greg, and wants to love his wife, Kate. Sylvia has a lot of energy and a lot of charisma. Why else would Greg bring her home an hour after meeting her? She’s adorable! For Sylvia, every day is the best day of her life. Character identifies as female.

GREG (45-60) Greg is Sylvia’s human. They go on long walks together. No comment on who is walking whom. Greg works on Wall Street and has done well. Well enough to take an apartment in the city when his last child moves on to university. The world of finance has worn Greg down. With his wife, Kate, focusing on her blooming career, Greg is lonely and unfulfilled. Enter Sylvia…and new meaning to his life. Character identifies as male.

KATE (45-60) Married to Greg and staunchly not interested in adding a dog to her life. Kate is focused on doing well in her new job with the NYC Board of Education. She is driven and welcomes her newly empty nest. She really doesn’t want a dog! Character identifies as female.

TOM/PHYLISS/LESLIE (30+) Three characters played by one actor. Tom is a fellow Greg meets at the dog run in Central Park. Phyllis is a friend of Kate’s and Leslie is a therapist visited by Greg and Kate. These characters identify as male, female and non-binary.

*The Liar
Description: In 1643, a charming young law student named Dorante arrives in Paris in search of a wife. He hires Cliton, a manservant who cannot tell a lie. Dorante, on the other hand, cannot tell the truth. He meets and falls in love with the witty and beautiful Clarice and spins a web of outrageous lies to attract her. Later, he mistakes her for her quiet friend, Lucrece, and courts the wrong girl, much to the dismay of Clarice. Unknown to Dorante, Lucrece is secretly engaged to his friend, Alcippe. He is also unaware that his father, Geronte, is trying to get him engaged to Clarice, who actually loves him—but he thinks she is Lucrece. Alcippe, now a violence-prone and jealous rival, and the ladies accuse Dorante of unfaithfulness and untruths. Dorante’s web of tangled lies paves the way for a great comedy, a multitude of mistaken identities, and sparkling romances. Will he be able to talk his way out of his sticky situations and into the arms of the right woman?

CLITON: (20-50) Comedic servant of Dorante. Unable to tell a lie. Introduces the play to the audience and plays a major role in the complications that ensue. Character identifies as male.

DORANTE: (20-40) A young man who has just arrived in Paris and longs to make a name for himself and find love. The titular character, who will take any opportunity to embellish and fabricate. Character identifies as male.

CLARICE: (20-35) A beautiful young Parisian woman who catches Dorante's eye. Clever and mischievous. Character identifies as female.

LUCRECE: (20-40) Clarice's more reserved and careful female friend, who nevertheless longs for more than playing second fiddle to Clarice. Character identifies as female.

ISABELLE / SABINE: (20-50) Two twin sisters (played by the same actress) who are maidservants. Isabelle is confident and earthy, and very cynical and pragmatic. Sabine appears very stern and prudish, but has a secret romantic streak (and is secretly in love with Philiste). They are often mistaken for each other. Character identifies as female.

ALCIPPE: (20-40) Clarice's fiance, who she refers to affectionately as her 'pug.' Fiercely jealous and prone to misunderstandings. Character identifies as male.

GERONTE: (40-60) Dorante's father, determined to find his son an appropriate marriage match in Paris. Character identifies as male.

PHILISTE: (20-40) A young friend of both Alcippe and Dorante. Good natured and mostly staying out of the fray. Secretly in love with Sabine. Character identifies as male.


*Animal Farm
Description: George Orwell’s allegory, Animal Farm will be given an imaginative staging, using puppetry and an ensemble of actors playing multiple roles. This is the story of a group of farm animals who rebel against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where the animals can be equal, free, and happy. Ultimately, however, the rebellion is betrayed, and the farm ends up in a state as bad as it was before.

Each actor will play a track of characters--all animals. Some actors may play characters of more than one gender.

CLOVER / EBBIE (any ethnicity/gender identity): Clover is a motherly mare, who notices everything and cares deeply, questions things, a wise soul with the guts to see and tell the truth. Gets your jokes, tells you the truth, will never desert you. Ebbie is a timid, nervous hen whose devotion to her chicks outweighs her fear of punishment. She surprises herself with her own strength.

SNOWBALL / PILKINGTON / BLUEBELL / NEXT GEN GOAT (any ethnicity/gender identity): Snowball is a brave, vivacious, intelligent activist. A pig full of audacious ideas and conviction, an inspiring, demanding leader/teacher/mind. Pilkington is a neighboring farmer—human, oozes with charm when it serves them. Bluebell is the fierce attack dog trained/brainwashed by Napoleon--physical, loyal, brutal. Next Gen Goat is a goat born into the oligarchy, a worker numbered and led by the pigs, oblivious to history.

SQUEALER / JONES (any ethnicity/gender identity): Squealer is a wicked-smart, persuasive spinmaster of a pig with charisma and a twinkle in their eye. Jones is the farmer who's ruled the Manor Farm and the animals for a long time. Always a hard master, Jones has grown less and less capable of running the farm, and thus has fallen on evil days. A heavy drinker. Self-centered, weak-willed, at times thoughtless, at times vicious.

NAPOLEON / MOSES (any ethnicity/gender identity): Napoleon is a pig of few words who has a reputation for getting his own way. He's a born leader with true charm. He can comfort in one moment, terrify in another. Moses is a tame raven and a colorful, clever talker who preaches of a mountain in the sky to which all animals go when they die. The special pet of ousted Mr. Jones.

BOXER / MOLLIE (any ethnicity/gender identity): Boxer is an enormous horse as strong as any two ordinary horses put together, self-describes as “not of first-rate intelligence” but is universally respected for steadiness of character and tremendous powers of work. Mollie is a pretty, foolish, and rather irresistible white mare who cares very much for the ribbons in her mane and sugar for snacks.

BENJAMIN / OLD MAJOR / BLUEBELL / possibly Orwell (any ethnicity/gender identity): Benjamin is the oldest animal on the farm, taciturn, comically ill-tempered-- a curmudgeon of a donkey. Unlike the others, Benjamin is not inspired by the Rebellion. Old Major is a venerable, elder pig nearing the end of their life, a parental figure respected by all the animals. Founder of the Movement. Bluebell is the fierce attack dog trained/brainwashed by Napoleon--physical, loyal, brutal.

MURIEL and MINORCA and NEXT GEN HEN and MRS. FREDERICK (any ethnicity/gender identity):
Muriel is a gossipy, smart, slightly kooky goat who wants to help and wants to believe. She fights for the Rebellion with a passion. Minorca is a tough-as-nails hen who fights for her family, despite the risks. Next Gen Hen is a hen born into the oligarchy, a worker numbered and led by the pigs, oblivious to history. Mrs. Frederick is a neighboring farmer —human, shmoozy elitist.


*Stick Fly
Description: The affluent, African American LeVay family is gathering at their Martha’s Vineyard home for the weekend, and brothers Kent and Flip have each brought their respective ladies home to meet the parents for the first time. Kent’s fiancée Taylor, an academic whose absent father was a prominent author, struggles to fit into the LeVay's upper-crust lifestyle. Kimber, on the other hand, is a self-described WASP who works with inner-city school children, fits in more easily with the family. Joining these two couples are the demanding LeVay patriarch Joe and Cheryl, the daughter of the family’s longtime housekeeper. As the two newcomers butt heads over issues of race and privilege, longstanding family tensions bubble under the surface and reach a boiling point when secrets are revealed.

TAYLOR (Late 20’s) Daughter from an earlier marriage of a renowned public intellectual. Engaged to Kent.
KENT (Spoon) (Early 30’s) Youngest son of the LeVay family.
CHERYL (18-22) Daughter of the family maid.
FLIP (mid 30’s) Oldest son of the LeVay family. The “golden boy.”
JOE (58-62) LeVay patriarch.
KIMBER (Early 30’s) White. Flip’s girlfriend.
