Based on Ingmar Bergman's film Smiles of a Summer Night, A Little Night Music is set in a weekend country house in turn of the century Sweden, bringing together surprising liaisons, long simmering passions and a taste of love’s endless possibilities. Witty and wildly romantic, the story centers on the elegant actress Desirée Armfeldt and the spider’s web of sensuality, intrigue and desire that surrounds her.
The role of Desirée Armfeldt will be played by Grammy Award winning artist Sylvia McNair.
SEEKING:
Anne Egerman
Female, 18-20. A ravishingly beautiful, well-bred girl who was recently married to Fredrick; a virgin; she’s innocent, but not an idiot; has some real spunk; a bit naïve; self-possessed but not worldly; emotional. Vocal Range: Soprano
Frederick Egerman
Male, 50s. A lawyer. Proper, a person of routine who covers a big set of thwarted desires; confident, but at the same time, vulnerable; attractive; Desirée’s former lover. Has a sense of playfulness which he keeps well covered. Vocal Range: Baritone
Petra
Female, 18 – 30. A maid in the Egerman household. Pretty, earthy, loves life and is experienced; can be a tease. Vocal Range: Mezzo-soprano
Count Carl Magnus Malcolm
Male, Late 30s to early 40s. “The vanity of a peacock, the brain of a pea, but the physical proportions …(of an Adonis?)” Perfectly dressed, very conceited, very controlling, easily jealous, a winning athlete with a body that boasts it, romantic in a clichéd way. Vocal Range: Baritone
Countess Charlotte Malcolm
Female, 30-40. Carl Magnus’ wife. Witty, sardonic, attractive; pretty injured underneath; appreciates sports and can shoot a pistol; a bit vicious; a bit conniving, but capable of real love and forgiveness.
Vocal Range: Mezzo Soprano.
The following roles are part of the Liebeslieder Quintet. All actors submitted need to be amazing, operatic singers, a variety of ages and types.
Mrs. Nordstrom:
Female, 40s-50. Vocal Range: High Soprano. She needs to be able to sing a sustained High E Flat.
Mrs. Anderssen:
Vocal Range: Soprano. She needs to be able to sing a high B flat and a low A Flat. She must be very comfortable in her middle and lower ranges.
Mrs. Segstrom:
Vocal Range: Mezzo Soprano. She should have a comfortable high B flat.
Mr. Erlanson:
Vocal Range: Tenor. Actor must be able to since from a Low C(3) to sustained high a C(5).
