Together In Dance

Together in Dance is a New York City non-profit that delivers dance and musical theatre programming to public school students and older adults rather than running an open-enrollment studio. Its teaching artists lead in-school creative movement residencies, in which children generate their own movement phrases and share them with families at a culminating open class, and musical theatre residencies for 4th and 5th graders that build an original show with the students covering singing, dancing, acting, playwriting and choreography. Other strands include after-school programming of roughly 15 sessions, family dance workshops run with schools and cultural institutions, professional development for classroom teachers, and a teaching-artist mentoring program. Workshops for older adults cover musical theatre dance and social dances such as swing, salsa and tango together with their historical and cultural background. The organization works with trauma-aware, social-emotional learning goals and is supported by the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts.
