Katha Dance Theatre (KDT) is a Kathak dance company and school in the Minneapolis area, with its studio at 5704 West 36th Street in St. Louis Park and its office in Crystal, Minnesota. Founded by Rita Mustaphi, a disciple of Pandit Birju Maharaj, the organization has been producing performances for more than 35 years and works to preserve and extend Kathak, a classical Indian dance form it describes as roughly 2,000 years old. KDT presents evening-length productions such as the world premiere of Rang-E-Ishq (Colors of Love) at the O'Shaughnessy at St. Catherine University and an annual Vasantotsav featuring emerging choreographers alongside its Company and Apprentice dancers. Its school offers a rigorous Kathak curriculum with fall enrollment open to dancers of all abilities aged 6 and up, running classes from September through mid-January, and it sells costumes and ghungru through an online store. Outreach programming brings cross-cultural workshops and performances to the local community.
