Discovery Programs is a children's activity center at 251 West 100th Street at West End Avenue on Manhattan's Upper West Side, a neighborhood institution for 53 years and now directed by Katie Kheel. Dance is one strand alongside infant and toddler classes, early childhood, music, gymnastics, martial arts, sports and parkour, art and homeschool classes. The dance offering starts with My First Dance, a parent-and-child class for 19-24 month olds introducing ballet and creative movement, then Get Up & Dance for 25-40 month olds sampling salsa, folk, ballroom, flamenco, African, modern and hip hop, Pre-Ballet for ages 2-7 taught through stories, music and games, Jazz & Hip Hop for ages 5-10, and technique ballet classes for ages 7-13, from which students have gone on to the School of American Ballet. Semesters run in autumn, winter/spring and summer, with weekly summer camp sessions and a dance concert in which even the two-year-olds perform.
