THE LION KING Sells Out Dallas Engagement

Disney's THE LION KING continues to reign across North America with a sold-out engagement in Dallas, which concluded on Sunday, October 20 at The Music Hall at Fair Park. The triumphant three-week return grossed over $4.9 million at the box office and entertained more than 79,000 patrons during 24 performances. The award-winning musical returned to Dallas following a six-week sold-out premiere in 2002 and a successful five-week return in 2007 at The Music Hall.
2013-2014 Betty Lynn Buckley Awards Will Now Accept Full-Length Play Submissions

Directed by Becki McDonald, who makes some excellent directing choices with her large cast of fifteen adult and children actors by combining brief oratory, traditional dialogue, and injecting cast members into the audience to DRAW viewers dead smack into the action. This created a theater experience that is equally educational, entertaining, and thought-provoking. Use of mixed media was also a component but the limitations of the performance space really hampered full immersion into the subject matter created by Robertson and Spencer in their script.

Dallas Theater Center announced today the complete creative team of the world premiere new musical The Fortress of Solitude, a co-production with The Public Theater in New York City. The Fortress of Solitude, based on the novel of the same name by Jonathan Lethem, is conceived and directed by Daniel Aukin, with a book by Itamar Moses, and music and lyrics by Michael Friedman. It will premiere at the Wyly Theatre with previews on March 7, 2014 and run through April 6.

You only live once, but you can perform your solo show about it over two weekends in January as Richardson Theatre Centre opens its 26th season with its first-ever Yolo Solo Festival, celebrating solo performances and close collaborations between playwrights and actors. The theme is "You only live once." All projects will reflect or express that theme.

The cast also includes Major Attaway as Tee-Tot, Christia Mantzke as The Waitress, Dave Rankin as Hoss and Dennis Bailey as Shag. FLIPSIDE: THE PATTI PAGE STORY is taking to the road. In anticipation of the production's Texas stops, I chatted with writer and director Greg White about the show. He explains, 'It's not a revue. It's her story,' and that the show itself is 'funny and very poignant.' He also told me that the show has a little something for everyone. After all, 'they call Patti [Page] Country-politan. She was one of the first crossover artists that did country, jazz, and pop. Believe it or not she did some R&B. Patti did everything.'
