BWW Review: DREAMGIRLS at Dallas Theater Center
by Kyle Christopher West - June 20, 2016
Prior to my attendance at Dallas Theater Center's DREAMGIRLS this weekend, my familiarity with the show was based on the 2006 motion picture and the 2001 Actors Fund concert recording (not to mention the Tony Awards clip featuring Jennifer Holliday). Basically knowing only the film, I had often considered how smoothly the stage show could handle the onstage to backstage transitions, given the fast-paced musical score it followed. And, although the DTC production offers a slick, seamless interpretation of the piece, I'm afraid I left the theatre with the impression that the (gasp) movie adaptation was superior to the stage version. That being said, there are still many reasons to head to the Wyly to see this production.

BWW Review: THE THRUSH AND THE WOODPECKER at Kitchen Dog Theater
by Aaron Zilbermann - June 15, 2016
18.1% of adults in the United States are suffering with a diagnosed mental illness. This number does not include substance abuse and it's even higher for women: 21.8%. With these statistics, it's easy to see why so many contemplate how these illnesses might play out in the daily lives of those who are ill, and particularly in the lives of loved ones. The Thrush and the Woodpecker, a play by Steve Yockey and produced by Kitchen Dog Theater in residence at The Undermain Theatre, explores this reality on a deeply personal level as the two primary characters, Brenda Hendricks and Roisin Danner, confront each other with conflicting and often warped realities.

BWW Review: BEAUTIFUL THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL at Winspear Opera House
by Kyle Christopher West - June 09, 2016
BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL might not have the same soundtrack as Beyonce's recent LEMONADE album, but there's enough dirty laundry aired in this musical biography to rival Ms. Knowles' infamous troubles. 'So Far Away,' 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,' 'The Locomotion,' 'It's Too Late,' and 'You Make Me Feel (Like A Natural Woman)' are just a few of the many hit songs that captivated audiences on Dallas' opening night of BEAUTIFUL at the Winspear Opera House. However, it wasn't just the songs that stirred the crowd, but the heart-wrenching story of Ms. King, a middle-class New York teenager who found fame and fortune in the public eye, yet kept a great deal of secret pain in her private life.
