Uptown Players Presents SPRING AWAKENING

Now in it its 18th season, Uptown Players is proud to present the musical Spring Awakening. Based on the play by Frank Wedekind, featuring book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik, the production runs one weekend only (January 31- February 3, 2019) at the Moody Performance Hall.

With an electrifying score that swings from folk to rock, Spring Awakening follows the unforgettable journey of a group of students in late 19th century Germany as they move from adolescence into adulthood. It explores their budding sexuality as it takes us from youthful lust to tragic consequences.

The ground-breaking play fuses morality, sexuality, and rock and roll, prompting critics to exclaim that its awakened Broadway like no other musical. Spring Awakening won eight Tony Awards which included Best Musical. In addition, New York Drama Critics Circle, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle hailed Spring Awakening as the Best Musical of the Year.

Jeremy Dumont, director of Spring Awakening, is drawn to this piece because "it handles some really tough and gritty issues but forces us to confront them instead of sweeping them under the rug." Jeremy thinks, "As a society, we do everything we can to avoid having frank and honest conversations about sex, sexual abuse, mental health and violence, yet these very issues permeate our society and culture." For Jeremy, what makes Spring Awakening so pertinent and relevant in our very tumultuous times is that it is "paramount to face and confront these issues honestly and openly so that youths and adults alike can start to heal from the pain that we all have felt from our own personal awakening."

The Spring Awakening creative team includes Direction and Choreography by Jeremy Dumont, Music Direction by Issac Leverton.

The all local cast includes Josh Bangle, Marianne Galloway, Abigail Gardner, Morgan Haney, Jacob Hemsath, Bill Jenkins, Thi Le, Theresa Kellar, Quinn Moran, Bryson Petersen, Collins Rush, Griffin Shoemaker, Rachel Sobol, and Zachary J. Willis

Spring Awakening is most appropriate for audiences 17 years of age and older due the adult language and mature themes including sexual content.

Spring Awakening runs January 31- February 3, 2019, with shows at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Performances take place at the Moody Performance Hall, 2520 Flora St, Dallas, TX 75201. Tickets are $35-$60 and can be purchased online at www.uptownplayers.org or by phone at (214) 219-2718
