Troilus and Cressida is often included in the category of Shakespeare's problem plays, largely because of the unusual collision of styles with the piece: high romantic poetry, slapstick, pompous rhetoric and brutal violence. The totality is a hilarious but harrowing rant about the absurdity of love in a time of war. The title purposely echoes Romeo and Juliet, but the backdrop is mythic. These Trojan lovers are doomed. Their pathetic attempts to fulfill their desires within the divisive political environment are shockingly relevant to our current American moment.
