Ballet 5:8 brings Sandra Cisneros’ beloved novel The House on Mango Street to life in a powerful and deeply human ballet, performed May 8–9. Rooted in the rhythms, voices, and lived experiences of Chicago, this production transforms Esperanza’s coming-of-age story into a moving theatrical experience that speaks to identity, belonging, and the search for home.

Told through a series of vivid, poetic vignettes, the ballet follows Esperanza as she navigates the complexities of growing up—discovering her voice, confronting the realities of her neighborhood, and imagining a future beyond what she sees around her. Through expressive choreography and rich theatrical imagery, Ballet 5:8 captures the emotional depth of Cisneros’ work while inviting audiences into a shared cultural and communal story.

This production is made possible in part through the NEA Big Read and Healing Illinois, supporting a year-long exploration of literature, art, and community dialogue. Leading up to the performances, Ballet 5:8 has engaged communities across Chicagoland through a series of workshops, library events, and bilingual gatherings, bringing the themes of Mango Street directly into neighborhoods, classrooms, and shared spaces.

These events have included multigenerational conversations, performance excerpts, and opportunities for participants to connect their own stories to Esperanza’s journey—making this production not just a performance, but the culmination of a broader community experience.

On May 8, a special school matinee invites students to engage directly with the work, with opportunities to connect literature and live performance in a meaningful way. Select performances will also feature the presence of Sandra Cisneros herself, offering a rare and powerful connection between the original text and its artistic interpretation.

At its heart, The House on Mango Street is a story about voice—who has it, who claims it, and how it shapes the future. Ballet 5:8’s adaptation honors that spirit, creating a work that is both intimate and expansive, rooted in Chicago and resonant far beyond it.

This is more than a ballet. It is a celebration of story, community, and the transformative power of art.
