There are voices that inform. And then there are voices that transform — the kind that make a room go still before it erupts. Mai-Elka Prado Gil is the latter. Born and rooted in Panamá, Mai-Elka is a singer, songwriter, and cultural producer whose music moves like memory: deep, layered, and alive. Drawing from the ancestral rhythms of Afro-Panamanian tradition — the drum languages carried across the Atlantic and reimagined in the isthmus where two oceans meet . Her voice is something singular: warm and vast, capable of holding grief and joy in the same breath, and anchored in a spiritual gravity that cannot be rehearsed. As an Afro-Latina artist, Mai-Elka embodies the full complexity of what it means to exist at the crossroads of Africa, the Americas, and the Caribbean. Her work has placed Mai-Elka at the center of some of the most exciting projects in Black Latin American culture of her generation. She has collaborated with Grammy nominee Petrona Martínez and the legendary Magín Díaz of Colombia, and with Enerolisa Núñez of the Dominican Republic. Her artistry has reached global audiences through the acclaimed Topic Documentary Film Miss Panama and the Disney+ talk show Turning the Tables with Robin Roberts. On stage, Mai-Elka is breathtaking. Hers is the rare presence that requires no introduction once the music begins — the kind that draws a crowd into something larger than a performance and closer to a collective memory. She has shared her gift across festivals and cultural stages as a producer, educator, and advocate, building bridges between Afro-descendant communities, artists, and audiences in New York City and beyond. This week our stage features Lebanese-American, New York-based pianist Tarek Yamani and the Tarek Yamani Trio; Becca Blackwell's latest deeply personal and deeply absurd solo show; Vietnamese pop star-turned protest singer Mai Khoi; Ryan Raftery's new satire IVANKA 2020; acclaimed lyricist and performer Charlotte Martin; celebrated comedienne Catherine Cohen; an album release concert from Divahn; a celebration of International Women's Day and Women's Month with ¡JEFAS!: A Celebration Of Latina Songwriters & Women In Music; and the return of Yemen Blues' brand of Yemenite chants swirled with jazz and rock grooves.
