The Canadian Opera Launches Season with LA BOHÈME Tonight

The Canadian Opera Company launches its 2013/2014 season with a new production of one of the world's greatest love stories, La Bohème. Puccini's masterpiece of youthful flirtation, passionate love and heartbreaking tragedy returns to the COC for 12 performances at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts tonight, October 3 and October 6, 9, 12, 16, 18, 19, 22, 25, 27, 29, 30, 2013.
Minnesota Opera to Launch Red Wing Community Residency, 10/7-26

Next Monday, Minnesota Opera will embark on a three-week, intergenerational community residency in Red Wing, Minnesota. From October 7–26, 2013, Minnesota Opera Teaching Artist Bergen Baker will work with Red Wing High School students, teaching them about the art form of opera through interactive lessons, individual coachings and masterclasses.

Tony Robinson will star as Kenneth Grahame, who narrates the Royal Opera House's production of The Wind in the Willows, in the ROH's first commercial transfer to London's West End. This well-loved story is brought to life through song, music, dance and puppetry. After an at-capacity run in the 2012-13 season, Opera Columbus will continue its successful, innovative collaboration with Shadowbox Live, Opera on the Edge, by presenting an abridged, English-language adaptation of Lehar's classic operetta, The Merry Widow. This lighthearted, romantic story and its engaging characters will be transported into a modern-day setting and transformed into an immersive, interactive, and highly accessible experience. Cast with local performers, The Merry Widow is supported by a grant from PNC Arts Alive, a multi-year initiative to support visual and performing arts groups with the goal of increasing arts access and engagement in new and innovative ways.

The New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera (Verismo Opera) pays tribute in its 24th season to the Year of Italian Culture in the United States with the double bill of Giacomo Puccini's sentimental tragedy Suor Angelica(Sister Angelica) and Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana (Rustic Chivalry). Under Artistic Director Lucine Amara, one of the Metropolitan Opera's most luminary performers, the company presents each opera with a full cast on Sunday, October 20, 3:00 p.m., at the Bergen Performing Arts Center (bergenPAC), 30 North Van Brunt Street, in Englewood, New Jersey. The one-night-only celebrations presented by NGP Energy Capital Management will take place both inside and outside the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center in the Dallas Arts District, on Friday, October 25, 2013 beginning at 5:30 p.m. with a lavish black-tie dinner at 6:00 provided by Puck Catering in a beautifully appointed tent in Sammons Park (located just off the main promenade to the Winspear Opera House).

Two rising young sopranos will make their Met debuts earlier than originally scheduled when they share the role of Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto later this fall, replacing Aleksandra Kurzak, who has withdrawn due to pregnancy. Russian soprano Irina Lungu will sing the role on November 11, 15, and 18, and Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva will sing the role on November 21, 27, 30, December 4, and at the December 7 matinee. Kurzak is expecting a baby this winter with her partner, tenor Roberto Alagna.

Fabio Luisi, Grammy and ECHO Klassik Award-winner and Principal Conductor of the Metropolitan Opera, launches his second season as General Music Director of the Zurich Opera with new productions of Beethoven's Fidelio and Verdi's Aida. Luisi also leads three revivals in the 2013-14 season: Bellini's La straniera, Offenbach's Les contes d'Hoffmann, and Verdi's Don Carlo, and conducts Philharmonia Zurich's 'Big Five' concert series, revealing why he is as venerated in the concert hall as he is in the opera house.
