Dance Workshop for Children
West Room 1 (Jamshed Bhabha Theatre
Building)
Monday, 15th to Saturday, 20th - 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm
Welcome to a fun introductory workshop that introduces kids (ages 7 to 14) to the joy of movement in Indian classical dance, particularly Bharata Natyam and Kuchipudi.
Participants will be encouraged to dance the steps, mudras and expressions and ask questions in order to kindle a deeper interest in the classical dances of India.
Each session will include watching and learning a short dance that will be performed in the final session. Each session will also highlight a different aspect of classical Indian dance - mudras,
rhythm and music, abhinaya as well as aspects of costume.
Amrita Lahiri began dancing in Washington, D.C. with Anuradha Nehru, a disciple of Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam. She later learnt Bharata Natyam from Leela Samson in New Delhi, and then continued her training in Kuchipudi under Swapnasundari. Since 2004, she has also performed regularly with Spanda, a group started by Leela Samson, presenting contemporary Bharata Natyam work. Her art reflects the influences of all of these outstanding gurus, and the experience of several performances as a soloist. She holds a Masters in sociology from JNU, New Delhi, and has worked in arts management in Kalakshetra, the Kennedy Center, the American Festival in Durham and Museum Rietberg in Zurich.
There will be an informal CHAURAHA presentation by all the participating children at the Little Theatre on Saturday, 20th March, at 6.30 pm.
