Circle Theatre Concludes 36th Season with APPLICATION PENDING

On the day applications are due at Edgely Prep, an elite Manhattan private school, the head of admissions is ousted in a scandal. Christine Evans, a Kindergarten assistant, is unexpectedly thrust into the job. With phones ringing off the hook, she must balance beleaguered applicants, incompetent administrators, and an army of parents who will stop at nothing to get their kids in. Greg Edwards & Andy Sandberg's comedy, Application Pending, explores the cutthroat world of kindergarten admissions and what it ultimately means to be a good parent.

Circle's production is directed by Jennifer Engler and features Janelle lutz* (Christine Evans, and over 40 other characters).

About the Playwrights

Greg Edwards (Playwright) wrote the scripts for Application Pending and Craving for Travel (Off-Broadway, co-written with Andy Sandberg), lyrics for Neurosis: A New Musical (Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, SALT Award for Best New Musical), and book and lyrics for Taking the Plunge (NYMF, Samuel French OOB Festival) and Evelyn Shaffer and the Chance of a Lifetime (Samuel French OOB Festival). He has collaborated with Marvin Hamlisch (White House Governors' Dinner, Mr. Hamlisch's holiday tour) and Arthur Laurents (Love Affair). Greg's essays are published in Avidly (Los Angeles Review of Books) and McSweeney's, and his game Jessica Plunkenstein and the Dusseldorf Conspiracy (NYT "Best Adventure Game of the Year") was published by PC Gamer UK. Honors and approximations thereof include the BMI Harrington Award, Fred Ebb Award (two-time finalist), and Nickelodeon Writing Fellowship (top-12 semifinalist). Greg graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Yale, belongs to the BMI Workshop, and can be stalked most effectively at GregEd.com.

Andy Sandberg (Playwright) is a writer, director, actor, and Tony Award-winning producer. He has written the scripts for Application Pending and Craving for Travel (co-authored with Greg Edwards), and he directed their world premieres off-Broadway. Application Pending received the BroadwayWorld Award for Best Off-Broadway Play and a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Solo Show. Other directing credits include the world premieres of Operation Epsilon (Four IRNE Awards, including Best Play, Best Director), Shida (AUDELCO nominations, Best Director and Best Musical) The Last Smoker in America, Zelda at the Oasis, R.R.R.E.D. and Bernice Bobs Her Mullet. He has been represented on Broadway as a producer of HAIR (2009 Tony Award; also London), The Best Man (2012 Tony nomination), and The Realistic Joneses. About the Star

Janelle lutz (Christine Evans, and over 40 other characters) is a local actress and singer. As a California native, she now enjoys calling Dallas her home. Over the last 3 years she has performed for many Dallas theatre companies, including Uptown Players, Lyric Stage, WaterTower Theatre and Dallas Children's Theatre. Janelle holds a BA in Voice Performance. She has received two DFW Theater Critics Forum Awards and can be heard on the first full-length cast recording of The Golden Apple through ps classics.

About the Director

Jennifer Engler (Director) has appeared at Circle Theatre as an actor in productions of: Hope and Gravity, Miracle on South Division Street, Marvin's Room, and Picasso at the Lapin Agile. She is thrilled to be returning to Circle Theatre as a Director having last directed According to Goldman by Bruce Graham. Jennifer is an associate professor at Texas Christian University, where she teaches various levels of acting, auditioning, movement, and dance. Mrs. Engler has directed productions of The Crowd You're in With, A Chorus Line, Assassins, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Seussical the Musical, Noises Off, Anatomy of Gray, Brighton Beach Memoires, Spelling Bee, and A Day in Hollywood / A Night in the Ukraine for Theatre TCU. She is an associate member of the Stage Directors and Choreographer's Society, a certified yoga instructor, and is trained in Laban. She received a BFA degree in Theatre from Emporia State University and an MFA in Acting from Michigan State University.
