- October 07, 2015 The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra is excited to be partnering with Carnegie Hall to bring the music education program Link Up to dozens of schools in Southeast Michigan. On March 16, 2016, thousands of 3rd-5th grade studentsfrom schools all over the region will come together at Hill Auditorium to play their recorders and sing along with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. These students will have spent the preceding months studying classical music using materials provided by Carnegie Hall. They will have moved to Bizet's Toreador in the classroom, practiced playing Mendelssohn's Nocturne from A Midsummer Night's Dreamon their recorders, sung Strauss's Blue Danube Waltz with their classmates, and composed their own pieces inspired by Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. In a program entitled “The Orchestra Moves,” these students will celebrate what they've learned about classical music in an engaging and interactive concert. - October 06, 2015 Music Director and conductor Michael Morgan and the Oakland Symphony continue their 2015/2016 season Friday, November 13, at 8 pm at the Paramount Theatre with a program entitled Lost Romantics.The evening will feature the debut of 2015 James Toland Voice Competition winner Brent Turner, tenor, and the return of gifted young pianist Llewellyn Werner-Sanchez. The program includes the rarely performed 1895 Symphony No. 3 of “lost” Romantic composer Victor Bendix and Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 1 with Mr. Sanchez-Werner—who was featured in 2015 on the Symphony's Notes from Mexico concert. Mr. Turner will perform Lehar's Freunde, das Leben is lebenswert from Giuditta and Dein ist mein ganzes Herz from Das Land des Lachelns, and Offenbach's Au mont Ida, trois Déesses from La Belle Hélène. Completing the program will be the Bach/Stokowski Toccata and Fugue in D minor, which served as the opening work in Disney's groundbreaking and visionary 1940 film Fantasia, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. No-host drinks and a pre-concert talk will begin at 7 pm and there will be free lobby entertainment and informal intermission talks with orchestra musicians at the foot of the stage. - October 06, 2015 Acclaimed pianist Yefim Bronfman returns to Carnegie Hall this season to perform Prokofiev's complete piano sonatas. The nine sonatas will be divided over three concerts with numbers 1-4 presented during the first performance on Friday, November 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Zankel Hall. Spanning the composer's early years, the first four sonatas reflect Prokofiev's coming of age as he began to cultivate and define his own musical language. For the second concert, on Wednesday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Zankel Hall, violinist Guy Braunstein joins Mr. Bronfman for a performance of Prokofiev's Violin Sonatas Nos. 1 and 2, two pieces of very contrasting character. Mr. Bronfman completes the program with Piano Sonatas Nos. 5 and 9. Mr. Bronfman returns for his final all-Prokofiev concert of the season on Saturday, May 7 at 8:00 p.m. in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. He concludes the cycle with sonatas 6-8, often referred to as the "War Sonatas" because of their reflection of the composer's reaction to World War II.
