Richmond Symphony Announces Altria Masterworks Concert, 4/8 by BWW News Desk
- March 23, 2017 Richmond, Virginia Music Director Steven Smith will lead the Richmond Symphony for the seventh Altria Masterworks concert of the season on Saturday, April 8 at 8pm and Sunday, April 9 at 3pm. The Symphony's Rennolds Memorial Concert will take place at the Dominion Arts Center's Carpenter Theatre and will feature Schubert's well-known “Unfinished” Symphony, as well as major choral works by Bruckner and Vaughan Williams. Joining the Symphony on stage will be the Richmond Symphony Chorus under the direction of Erin R. Freeman and guest vocalists Michelle Areyzaga (soprano) and Kevin Deas (bass-baritone).

California Symphony Presents the World Premiere of TANGLE EYE, 5/7 by BWW News Desk
- March 22, 2017 Music Director Donato Cabrera leads the California Symphony in the world premiere of the newly-commissioned cello concerto, Tangle Eye, by its current Young American Composer-in-Residence, Dan Visconti, with soloist Inbal Segev on Sunday, May 7 at 4 pm at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek. The Israeli-American cellist, now based in New York, is a champion of contemporary music, and performs as a soloist with a Bay Area orchestra for the first time in the Orchestra's May 7 season finale. This is Visconti's final work as a Young American Composer-in-Residence with the Orchestra; his residency ends this year. The California Symphony also performs Bruckner's Symphony No. 6 for the first time in its 30-year history, and the program opens with Beethoven's Coriolan Overture.

Alan Gilbert Conducts Final Weeks with the NY Philharmonic by BWW News Desk
- March 22, 2017 Music Director Alan Gilbert begins his final weeks by leading the New York Philharmonic in Schoenberg's A Survivor from Warsaw and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. The program juxtaposes the tragedy and optimism of human experience through Schoenberg's depiction of the horror of the Holocaust and the message of hope, brotherhood, and joy in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Schoenberg's A Survivor from Warsaw will feature Gabriel Ebert as narrator (in his Philharmonic debut) and the men of the Westminster Symphonic Choir, directed by Joe Miller. Beethoven's Ninth Symphony will feature soprano Camilla Tilling, mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack (debut), tenor Joseph Kaiser (debut), bass-baritone Eric Owens, and the Westminster Symphonic Choir, directed by Joe Miller. The performances will take place Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, May 5 at 8:00 p.m.; Saturday, May 6 at 8:00 p.m.; and Tuesday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. The program will be presented without intermission.
Philadelphia Youth Orchestra Students To Participate in 2017 NYO-USA at Carnegie Hall by BWW News Desk
- March 22, 2017 Each summer, the country's most gifted young musicians are chosen by Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute to form the National Youth Orchestra of the United States (NYO-USA) of America. This year, seven Philadelphia Youth Orchestra (PYO) students have been selected to participate in the prestigious 2017 NYO-USA. The PYO students who have been chosen from PA are: Fiyi Adebekun, violin, of Lansdale, Allyson Cohen, violin, of Narberth, Isabella Egawa, violin, of Bala Cynwyd, Johnny May, violin, of Penn Valley and Joy Zhao, cello, of Chalfont. The student from DE is Conor McAvinue, violin, of Wilmington, and the student from NJ is Daniel Kim, clarinet, of Skillman.

- March 21, 2017 Carnegie Hall today announced that baritone Florian Boesch must regrettably withdraw from his upcoming duo-recital with soprano Miah Persson scheduled for this Wednesday, March 22 at 7:30 p.m. in Zankel Hall due to illness. Ms. Persson has agreed to instead offer a solo recital joined by pianist Malcolm Martineau, who was already scheduled to perform this concert. Live at Orchestra Hall, a series of popular music, jazz, Broadway classics, movie scores, world music and other genres, is led by Principal Conductor of Live at Orchestra Hall Sarah Hicks.
