New Historical Nove by William Vlach is Released
by BWW News Desk - November 11, 2014
Full Court Press is releasing the dramatic historical novel The Golden Chalice of Hunahpú: A Novel of the Spanish Attack on the Maya by San Francisco psychologist and writer William Vlach. The front cover is by noted Guatemalan artist Emanuel Paniagua. 'To understand the crisis of the children at the border, one needs to understand the violent origin of the Americas,' Vlach said. 'The book reveals the Spanish-Mayan war, the so-called Conquest, from the first person narratives of both the Mayans and the Spanish.' Early notes have included Kirkus Reviews: 'Vlach, a practicing psychologist, has clearly done his research for this debut novel; the historical detail is impressive and the settings are vivid and realistic.'; Ramón Sender Barayón, author of A Death in Zamora: 'What a page-turner!'; and Alejandro Murguía, Sixth Poet Laureate of San Francisco: 'A work in the great tradition of Miguel Angel Asturias-the magical voice of the Maya come to life.' The Golden Chalice of Hunahapú is an epic novel of the struggle for the Americas, an odyssey moving from the pre-Columbian Mayan empire to the splendid Golden Age of Spain then back to the battle for the land and soul of Guatemala. The tale is told in three first person chronicles: Kaqchikel Mayan prince Belehe Qat is both witness and warrior as he tries to save his people; young and fierce Spanish noblewoman Beatriz pursues marriage to the powerful conquistador, Alvarado, only to find the New World is more than she bargained for; and the hilariously acerbic Domingo, a Sancho Panza-like monk, seeks to find meaning in the middle of this 16th century American holocaust. Their intertwining stories lead to the shocking volcanic climax. Vlach, a police psychologist, who has done field work in Guatemala with his anthropologist wife, Norita Vlach, has published poetry, essays, and won awards for both his playwriting and parody. Cover artist, Guatemalan Emanuel Paniagua, who works with both paintings and sculpture, says about his work, 'I was born into an aesthetic culture that has been crafted through centuries with artistic mastery in weavings, clay, stone.' The Golden Chalice of Hunahpú: A Novel of the Spanish Attack on the Maya is available at independent bookstores, Amazon.com, Barnes&Noble.com, and other online bookstores. For more information and interviews about this new release, William Vlach may be reached at: Phone: 415-681-6565 Email: williamvlach@gmail.com. Local Comic Writer Featured at NC Comicon
by BWW News Desk - November 11, 2014
'Not So Super Comics' Aims to Shatter Perception of Independent Publishing From the moment he could hold a book, Cary resident Jacques Nyemb has been a fan of comics. For the past three years, he has written his own series, 'Not So Super Comics,' three issues of which were recently printed following a successful Kickstarter campaign. The campaign raised $3,815 and was backed by 148 people around the world, including Australia, Canada, and the Netherlands. On Nov. 15 and 16, Nyemb's comics will be on display and for sale at NC Comicon at the Durham Convention Center. NC Comicon draws thousands of fans, artists, and writers from around the globe. 'I'm excited to have the opportunity to share some brand new, all-ages comics to fans of the medium,' Nyemb said. 'Being a North Carolinian, I couldn't think of a better place to unveil the books than where I live. I'm hoping to get local comic fans to help strengthen the Not So Super Comics brand and enjoy some quality comic books that were written in their backyard.' Working with an array of talented artists, Nyemb's goal with 'Not So Super Comics' is to provide something that everyone can enjoy-books that adults and children can read together (or individually), without feeling alienated. He wants to open up the comic world to everyone-super fans and newbies alike. 'Not So Super Comics' mission is simple-we want to get all kinds of folks into comics,' Nyemb said. 'We want to stop it from being this inaccessible niche market, but rather turn it into an important part of literacy. We want to create stories people would want to talk about around the water cooler without needing 30 years of continuity to feel included. We want to represent all people in some way in this medium that has so much potential.' Nyemb, 31, lives in Cary with his wife and 3-year-old daughter. During the day he is web designer for a Raleigh organization. Visit him at Booth A77 at NC Comicon. The show runs from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. Nov. 15 and 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Nov. 16.

New Book is Released on Conquering Shock and Trauma
by BWW News Desk - November 11, 2014
Shock is the body's emotional response to a traumatic event such as a school shooting, IED explosion, rape, sudden death of a loved one, natural disaster (hurricane, earthquake or flood) or terrorist act (Boston Marathon bombing). Immediately after the event, shock and denial are typical responses, causing the person affected to shut down mentally and physically. This overwhelming sensation of lost security and predictability threatens one's perception that the world is a safe place and affects 7.7 million adults in the U.S. alone and millions more worldwide annually, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. Diane Zimberoff, LMFT, and David Hartman, LICSW, in 'Overcoming Shock: Healing the Traumatized Mind and Heart' (New Horizon Press, November 11, 2014) explore the effects of shock on our lives, including its impact on family dynamic, abuse in relationships, addictions, depression and mental stability. 'Overcoming Shock' provides proven strategies, techniques and tools for successful treatment, intertwined with stories of real-life examples of people who have successfully overcome the debilitating effects and post-traumatic ramifications of shock and trauma. The authors are available for interviews. In addition, an article entitled Making Sense Out of Senseless School Shootings is appended to this release and may be used freely with attribution. About the Authors: Diane Zimberoff, LMFT is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with clinical specialties in addiction recovery, stress-related illness and codependency. She is the co-founder and Director of Training at The Wellness Institute, one of the oldest and most respected providers of hypnotherapy certification and hypnosis training.
