A Little Night Music captured multiple Tony awards when it first premiered on Broadway in 1973, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book for Hugh Wheeler, who also collaborated with Stephen Sondheim on Sweeney Todd. One of Sondheim's greatest works, A Little Night Music was inspired by Ingmar Bergman's film, Smiles of a Summer Night.
?
Set in Sweden the summer of 1900, the lives of several romantic couples turn into a swirling web of affairs that seem to revolve around actress Desirée Armfeldt. Jealousy, passion, and suspicion of each other’s fidelity—or lack thereof—ignites the tension between the complex cast of characters as they waltz through Sondheim’s magnificent score.
The tension only grows when they all congregate for a weekend in the country at Desirée’s mother’s estate. Though the summer sun refuses to set, the moon will smile down on this musical masterpiece of new romances and second chances.
