Ok, so I am in kinda of a mood, and want to put together a playlist of some of Broadway's great unrequited love songs, and I wanted some help from you all.
So far I have several songs from Zanna Don't, "I'm not that Girl," from Wicked, "Once in Awhile," from The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
I need some help thinking of other ones, it doesn't matter what show they are from. Updated On: 3/30/09 at 05:40 PM
Is, "not a day goes by" from Merrily an unrequited love song?
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I listened to "Loving You" on a loop for 2 weeks after my last break up. Yeah it's a good one if you've just gotten your heart ripped out of your chest and spit on by a cheating liar after 2 years of nothing but helping them and being there for them and giving yourself over completely, but hey. I'm not bitter at all!! lol
If I Loved You - Carousel Love Look Away - Flower Drum Song As Long As He Needs Me - Oliver! Where Is Love? - Oliver!
"I love acting. It is so much more real than life." Oscar Wilde "After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music." Aldous Huxley
In the context of the show, the love technically gets "requited," but... "Joanna" in Sweeney Todd seems like a great unrequited love song (albeit a bit stalker-ish).
"On My Own" is obviously the quintessential example of unrequited love though.
A lot of the good ones have already been mentioned. I'm not sure if my list completely follows the theme, but here it is:
The Long Grift from Hedwig and the Angry Inch Hey There from Pajama Game Without You from RENT How Many Women in the World? from LaChuisa's The Wild Party An Old Fashioned Love Story from Lippa's The Wild Party, humorous as it is. Dear Friend from She Loves Me A few songs from Tell Me on a Sunday/Song & Dance Lonely Pew from Reefer Madness, lol Not from a show, but Kerry Butler's version of When She Loved Me from Toy Story 2 on her solo album.
And just because I'm a stickler for this. It's The Rocky Horror Show, not the Picture Show, that's the name of the film. Once in Awhile isn't in the film, it was recorded and shot but was left on the cutting room floor.
You're reminding me of people you hear at the movies asking questions every ten seconds, "Who is that? Why is that guy walking down the street? Who's that lady coming up to him? Uh-oh, why did that car go by? Why is it so dark in this theater?" - FindingNamo on strummergirl
"If artists were machines, then I'm just a different kind of machine...I'd probably be a toaster. Actually, I'd be a toaster oven because they're more versatile. And I like making grilled cheese" -Regina Spektor
"That's, like, twelve shows! ...Or seven." -Crazy SA Fangirl
"They say that just being relaxed is the most important thing [in acting]. I take that to another level, I think kinda like yawning and...like being partially asleep onstage is also good, but whatever." - Sherie Rene Scott
Breaking up or having relationship troubles != unrequited love
So you can throw out "We Do Not Belong Together," "If I Loved You," "Without You," and "Lonely Pew." There are probably more that have been mentioned that really aren't about unrequited love.
