Will someone tell me what I missed?
Just saw SPEED-THE-PLOW and thought she was horrible. Did I miss something here?

Well, for starters, you missed the spelling of her name.
It's Elisabeth Moss, not Elizabeth.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.

Posted: 10/20/08 at 1:01pmI thought Elisabeth was wonderful and definitely held her own against two older and more-seasoned actors.I kept trying to imagine Madonna in that role and just couldn't do it.

Posted: 10/20/08 at 3:25pmWhen I read the play, I thought there was nothing to the role but she is so earnest, so enthusiastic about the weird radiation book that she convinced me that she could convince Bobby to change his mind. The whole second scene is so long, and it is all hers, and I thought she actually gave it an arc. She starts out talking about the book, but by the end of the scene she is really talking to Bobby about Bobby!

Posted: 10/20/08 at 5:01pmI know what you mean about Elisabeth Moss. Actually, as much as I love Mad Men, I find that nearly all of the main female characters sound rather emotionless. I'm not sure if it's the direction or the dialogue, but Elisabeth Moss' voice and delivery fit right into the flat Mad Men mode.

Posted: 10/20/08 at 5:27pmI think Moss is excellent on "Mad Men." I don't think it's a great career move for her though go from playing a sexy, ambitious secretary on TV to playing...a sexy, ambitious secretary on Broadway. Two very similar roles in two back-to-back high-profile projects.

Posted: 10/20/08 at 6:41pmMadonna was arch and one-note, and like Nina in SEAGULL, "didn't know what to do with her hands..." I didn't entirely blame her, because the role is so monotonous. But then, I find the play that way -- a lot of jerking off about Hollywood, blah-blah, aren't we over all that by now? It was been there/done that when it came around the first time.

Piven got lost in the role and the dialogue, and Raul just mugged to the audience the whole time instead of playing a character with a full arc. He didn't show any new sides of the character. And I found the play dull, and pointless. It's nothing like the TV ads say, ah. But I did enjoy her. I found myself missing her when she wasn't on stage.

Charlie doesn't have new sides. He is cynical and completely obsessed with whatever is going to put money in his pocket. He doesn't go from point A to point B and "change" or like, come to some sort of revelation so much as he almost goes in a big circle. That itself is a huge comment on the nature of his job and the industry of which it's part. He's totally consumed by his hunger for success, and by the mindset of the business.
I love the TV ads, but I kind of wish the play were as sexy as they make it seem!

Mamet (Lord love him) can't write female dialogue well, and never gets close to overt seduction in this play.
BUT Bobby Gould might not have responded well to seductive behavior because he already sees everyone around him trying to "promote" him. I think dramatically he falls for Karen because she is not jumping him.
That said, I, too, wish the play was as sexy as the ads make it seem...
