So...for the past couple of weeks I've been posting about my SENIOR musical Bye Bye Birdie. I'm sad to say we have to cancell.

Our Rosie...has something wrong with her throat, I cant remember the name of it but apparently its like little knots on her throat.

It's very sad. Especially it being my Senior show. But I'll be okay. Just hard for my first "cancelled show".

So our new plan...we MIGHT put on a Cabaret show. Do a couple of Musical number scenes yah know...Any suggestions what we could do?

Thanks again

you cancelled you show because ONE person was sick? I've NEVER heard of that. even if she had no understudy, someone in ensemble could have pulled it off. I'm sure everyone knows the show well enough now. and do you get a re-embersed for the right?

We would have opened in 2 weeks. Here WAS the plan.

Tianna who played Kim would have stepped up and did Rosie.
And then we'd replace Kim with the girl who played Ursula and then replace Ursula.

But I dont know now...

I worked on Thoroughly Modern Millie- and our Jimmy had a really bad infection like the week before hand, and we were working one of the interns to learn the lines and songs in that week- but luckily Jimmy came back two nights before open

I understand if a handful- but one?

yeah, losing one actress 2 weeks prior to the show doesn't seem like reason to cancel the production at all--unless they're using it as an excuse because the show wasn't developing well...

i've been in shows without understudies where we had to replace a mid-level role between the last dress rehearsal and opening night.

2 weeks? thats more than enough time. We had to replace out Brutus in Caesar 10 days before our opening.

We lost our Winnifred in Once Upon a Mattress when I was in school about 2 weeks before the show was to run and she was replaced by another cast member. It is possible to do.

Stranger things have happened and the show still went on!

NO reason to cancel for one sick actress. Yeah, sure, we hope she gets better, but why should the whole class suffer. Surely the show is not relying only on her talents anyway!

Sending someone on with a script in hand is better than calling off the show!

ucjr - it all depends on how severe the nodes have grown. One of my clients had soreness for months but refused to get scoped until, one day, he could barely speak.

the damage was so severe that ENT's refused to operate. he had to go through 6 months of vocal rest (imagine being "silent" for that long) and then a full year of vocal rehabilitation. He's fine now.

Others catch it quick enough. A colleague was notified of newly grown nodes, which had been Pallaps (pre-node growths), during a yearly checkup. She went in and got the operation. Was back belting and singing on stage in 3 weeks.

To be honest. I thought to myself replace her but the director has said its cancelled. Like I said about we were going to rearrange the cast. But he wasnt sure if it woudl work. So tonight I'm going to see what I can do...

I don't know if you guys are religious but please PRAY for the girl with nodes and this show.

Broadwayworld World! For the greater good of a musical. How can I make this work? I NEED YOUR HELP! Lets work it!

Heres the thing..we'd move Kim to Rosie...and Ursula to Kim and An ensemble kid to Ursula.

But the catch---the girl who we'd make Kim isnt an amazing singer. How COULD we make the show work...but not be crap?

But do you think that the One Night Cabaret would work in a small town?

I think at that point, you just have to deal with what you have. I mean, obviously if this girl got in the show, she can't be too aweful. Sure, maybe she isn't as good as the original, but just have faith that it will work out. Unless someone else knows more about this type of stuff then I do.

UCJRDude, be glad you get to do a show at all. I went to this really lame high school in VA that never did muscials, until all of the sudden in my senior year, one of the ALGEBRA teachers decided to do a student production of "Bye, bye Birdie". No, the drama teacher and music teachers were not involved...they actually REFUSED to help! We had some woman (a friend of the algebra teacher) brought in to be the choreographer--she had broken her leg and was on crutches the whole time she was trying (supposed to be) teaching the cast the dance steps! To make matters worse, most of the kids that had tried out for the show also tried out for spring sports. And sports--not the arts--ruled at my school. So, the end result was that halfway through rehearsals, about half the cast discovered they had made the soccer/baseball/softball/track/whatever team, and they promptly quit the show! Of course their buddies, who weren't in sports, had only auditioned for the show because their athletic had. So when all these kids made their teams, they dropped out of the show AND so did all their friends! So, in one week, we went from 75 kids in the cast to about 6! Needless to say, show got cancelled! I don't believe they have ever tried to do another one. And I would have been playing Mae Peterson (Albert's mother)...I wanted to wear that fur coat! Sucks!

I had to replace one of the sisters in Fiddler (Chava, I think) only 3 days before opening night. I know it's no where near as big a role as Rosie...but the girl learned the part, the music and all the choreography. She was NOT an official understudy but a student assistant director.

IF the director wanted to, it could be done...without THAT much difficulty.

To each his own....best of luck with you cabernet...I mean, cabaret.
